Have you ever imagined yourself as a child running toward… yourself? Picture it: that tiny version of you, eyes wide with wonder and arms outstretched, sprinting toward your adult self. What would you feel in that moment? A rush of emotions? A pang of tenderness? That’s because deep within, you still carry the essence of that child—a heart that, above all, craves to be loved.
When you were small, being hugged made everything feel safe and whole. In those moments, you knew that all you ever wanted was to be loved, cared for, and acknowledged. And here’s the truth: as an adult, when you’re hugged, when someone acknowledges you, you’re reminded that nothing has really changed. Your soul still longs for the same thing—to love and to be loved.
And yet, life gets messy. People stumble through their own struggles, weighed down by the invisible burdens of the day. We do our best to hold it together, but how often does someone stop to ask how we’re really doing? How often do we take the time to see someone else’s silent battle?
Break the Cycle
Here’s the good news: You have the power to change this. To break the cycle. You can first receive love from Christ, spend some time with Him, and know how much he loves you. Soak in it. Cherish that time with him. Then be the person who extends love freely, without expectations. To love as Christ loves us. It’s not about grand gestures or heroic deeds. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a kind word, a warm smile, or a moment of genuine care.
Why should we love? Because we are loved first. As Christians, the love of Christ dwells within us, filling our hearts with an abundant capacity to care for others. When we love others, we reflect the image of God. We become vessels of His grace, His mercy, His kindness.
And here’s the incredible thing about loving without expectation: it changes people. When you show the love of Christ to someone—freely, generously—they are drawn to it. They begin to see the light in you and, through you, the source of that light. They see not just who you are, but whose you are—a child of God.
As Paul writes in Romans 13:8 (NIV):
“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.”
What a beautiful responsibility we have! To love as Christ loves, acknowledge the hurt, the loneliness, and the longing in others. To meet them where they are with the same compassion and grace we’ve received.
Be that Person
So today, be that person. Be the one who acknowledges the childlike need for love in someone else. Hug a friend, smile at a stranger, encourage a coworker. Love with abandon, without expecting anything in return. Love because Christ has loved you fully and completely.
And as you do, remember this: when we love freely, we bring heaven a little closer to earth. We remind the world that even in the darkest moments, love has the power to heal, to redeem, and to make all things new.
