The Goodness of God That Changes Everything: Rom 2:4

3–4 minutes

Romans 2:4 says it so clearly:

“Do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

You don’t have to walk far to find someone standing on a street corner, shouting: “If you don’t believe in Jesus Christ, you’ll go to hell!”
Here’s the thing—that’s true. The Bible says, “Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36). That’s the truth.

But the problem isn’t whether it’s true. The problem is how people think the gospel is meant to be preached. Some believe that if they tear down other religions, they’ll win people over. Others think if they preach enough about hell, people will repent. And maybe, for a short while, it works. But Scripture shows us—the real way God brings people into His kingdom is through His goodness. That’s the way!

The Bible’s Pattern: God’s Goodness Comes First

Look at Exodus 4:31. The people of Israel believed when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them. Not when He judged them. Not when He gave them rules. Not when He threatened punishment. They praised God spontaneously simply because they knew He cared.

And in Luke 5:8, after Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law—when He didn’t have to—Peter responded, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” That’s repentance born from experiencing undeserved love.

Now think about it:

  • Noah preached wrath for over a hundred years… and no one joined him on the boat.
  • Peter preached grace for a single day… and 3,000 people were added to the church.

It’s not about watering down the truth—it’s about showing the heart of God in that truth.

What the Goodness of God Looks Like

The goodness of God isn’t an abstract theological concept—it’s real, tangible, and deeply personal. It looks like:

  • Kneeling with the broken
  • Dining with the outcasts
  • Forgiving the unforgivable
  • Ministering healing freely
  • Loving without judgment

That’s the Jesus people followed in droves—not because they feared Him, but because they saw His love in action.

Why Love Draws More Than Fear Ever Could

Deep down, every human heart is longing for love, compassion, and empathy. People are far more likely to receive Christ when they see that their God truly cares for them.

Close your eyes for a moment. Picture yourself as a child—misunderstood, maybe unloved—and then imagine your adult self running toward that child with open arms. Feel the hug. Does it stir something in you?

Most people get emotional at that thought. Why? Because so many live without that kind of love. And yet—that’s exactly the love God offers.

He knows every flaw, every failure, every hidden thought. And still, He says:
“Child, if you believe, you are in Me and I am in you. Your only way out of destruction is this—you have been prepared for glory. And I love you, son… I love you, daughter.”

The Gospel That Truly Transforms

The kindness of God isn’t about ignoring sin—it’s about addressing it in the context of His mercy. It’s about leading people, not by fear of hell, but by the hope of His love.

Preach truth, yes—but make sure the truth you preach reveals His goodness. Because it’s not wrath that changes hearts—it’s love.

Before you go, listen to this. This is the God’s invitation for you. He loves you.
