Introduction: Revelation Misunderstood
For many believers shaped by dispensational teaching, Revelation 20’s “1,000 years” is read as a future era: a literal earthly reign of Christ after a rapture and tribulation. But if the cross was the decisive victory — the Finished Work — then the millennium is not a distant hope. It is the present reign of Christ.
The question is simple: does Christ reign now, or is His reign postponed?
1. The Symbolic Thousand Years
“He seized the dragon… and bound him for a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:2)
In apocalyptic literature, numbers are symbolic. The “thousand years” represents completeness, not a stopwatch. Amillennialism teaches this is the Church Age, spanning from Christ’s resurrection until His return.
- Dispensationalism: 1,000 years is literal, still future.
- Finished Work Amillennialism: 1,000 years is symbolic, happening now.
2. Christ’s Reign Secured at the Cross
The Finished Work means Jesus already rules:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18)
“God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 2:6)
This reign is not postponed for a future millennium. It is a present kingdom reality — believers already share in His authority, advancing the gospel in the power of the Spirit.
3. The Binding of Satan
Dispensationalists say Satan’s power will only be curbed in a future millennium. But Jesus said otherwise:
“How can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man?” (Matthew 12:29)
At the cross, Satan was bound in the sense that he cannot stop the spread of the gospel. He is defeated (Colossians 2:15), though still active until his final destruction.
4. The First Resurrection
John writes:
“They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:4)
Amillennialism interprets this as the spiritual resurrection believers experience in Christ now:
“God made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.” (Ephesians 2:5)
The second resurrection will be physical, at Christ’s return.
5. The End of the Millennium
Revelation 20 ends with Satan’s release for a short time, then final judgment and new creation. There is no mention of a second earthly reign. The millennium concludes with Christ’s return, not with another phase of history.
6. Kingdom Now vs Kingdom Delayed
- Dispensationalism: Christ will reign physically on earth in a future millennium after a rapture and tribulation. The kingdom is postponed until then.
- Finished Work Amillennialism: Christ reigns now. The millennium is symbolic of His present reign, inaugurated at the cross. The only thing left is His return to unveil what is already true.
Conclusion: Celebrate the Victory
The millennium is not a future dream. It is the present reality of Christ’s kingdom. The cross bound Satan, enthroned Christ, and raised believers to reign with Him.
“Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.” (1 Corinthians 15:24)
Dispensationalism postpones hope. Finished Work theology proclaims: Christ reigns already. The kingdom is here.
