You’ve likely heard someone say it:
“You carry a unique anointing!”
“There’s something special on your life that nobody else has.”
“Only you can release what heaven has placed inside of you.”
It’s the kind of thing that sounds empowering and affirming—like a spiritual compliment.
But is it really biblical?
Let’s explore the idea of “unique anointings” and why it might sound spiritual… but actually distracts us from the simplicity and unity of the gospel.
What Does “Anointing” Mean in the New Testament?
In the Old Covenant, anointing was reserved for priests, prophets, and kings. It was external, temporary, and symbolic—using oil to set someone apart for a role.
But under the New Covenant, something radically changed:
“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.” — 1 John 2:20
“The anointing you received from Him remains in you…” — 1 John 2:27
The anointing is not a ministry gift or mystical power—it is the Holy Spirit Himself, permanently dwelling in the believer.
It’s not a special coating you earn by praying, fasting, or achieving spiritual status. It’s Christ in you.
What’s Wrong With “Unique Anointing” Language?
- It creates hierarchy in the Body of Christ.
Instead of seeing all believers as equally filled with the Spirit, we elevate some as having a “superior oil.” - It breeds comparison and insecurity.
You start thinking, “Maybe I don’t have the same anointing,” or “I need to go get what they carry.” - It replaces Christ’s sufficiency with individual branding.
In some circles, “unique anointing” has become a marketing tool to draw followers, not point to Jesus.
One Spirit, Many Gifts
Yes, God gives diverse gifts (1 Corinthians 12).
Yes, we each have different functions in the Body.
But here’s the key:
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.” — 1 Corinthians 12:4
The power is not in your uniqueness.
The power is in His Spirit.
You are not “more anointed” if you prophesy or lead worship or preach to stadiums.
The same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in all believers.
The True Anointed One
The word “Christ” literally means “The Anointed One.”
And here’s what Scripture says:
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…” — Galatians 2:20
That’s the real anointing: Jesus Himself in us.
He’s not divided.
He doesn’t give a “gold-tier” version to some and a “basic plan” to others.
He gives Himself. Entirely.
Final Thought
If you’re in Christ, you’re not missing anything.
You don’t need to discover your “unique anointing.”
You need to rest in the finished work of Jesus, and walk in the Spirit you already have.
Let’s stop magnifying personality-driven ministry language, and start magnifying Christ in us—the hope of glory.
“You have been filled in Him, who is the head over all rule and authority.” — Colossians 2:10
That’s not just unique—that’s complete.
