“You Need a Spiritual Covering”: Additional Coverage after being “In Him”?

2–3 minutes

One of the more popular buzzphrases in many church circles is:

“You need to be under a spiritual covering.”
“Without a covering, you’re exposed to the enemy.”
“Don’t step out unless you’re under someone’s authority.”

It sounds serious. Spiritual. Responsible.

But is it Biblical?

Let’s take a closer look.

What Does “Spiritual Covering” Even Mean?

In most modern usage, “spiritual covering” implies that:

  • You need to be submitted under a leader or pastor to be protected.
  • You can’t function in ministry unless someone with “spiritual authority” permits you.
  • If you don’t have a covering, you’re “rebellious” or exposed to spiritual attack.

But here’s the thing: this exact idea is nowhere in the New Testament.

Not once did Paul or Peter or John instruct believers to “find a spiritual covering.”
Not once did they say your authority comes from another human being’s approval.

Your Covering Is Christ

The New Covenant makes it incredibly clear: Jesus is your covering.

“You have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” — Colossians 3:3
“He has clothed me with garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness.” — Isaiah 61:10

You’re not naked and vulnerable.
You’re fully covered—by His righteousness, His blood, and His name.

There is no human priest or pastor who can add to the covering Christ already gave you.

What About Submission to Leadership?

Yes, Hebrews 13:17 says:

“Obey your leaders and submit to them…”

But this is in the context of local church fellowship, mutual respect, and accountability.
It’s not about transferring authority or anointing. It’s about humility and service in the body.

Healthy leadership equips, it doesn’t control.

The Problem with “Covering” Language

  1. It creates spiritual hierarchy.
As if some believers are “higher” than others and you need their protection to function.
  2. It undermines the priesthood of all believers.
    1 Peter 2:9 says you are a royal priesthood—not a sub-priest under someone else.
  3. It breeds fear and dependency.
People are afraid to move unless they “get permission,” thinking they’ll be cursed or attacked without a covering.

That’s not freedom. That’s bondage dressed up in spiritual language.

You Don’t Need a Middleman

Jesus tore the veil (Matthew 27:51) so that you could have direct access to the Father.
He didn’t tear it so someone else could stand between you and God again.

🙌 Final Thought

Accountability is healthy.
Community is beautiful.
Mentorship is valuable.

But your spiritual safety, identity, and authority come from Christ alone.

You’re not covered because a pastor gave you permission.
You’re covered because the Lamb was slain and you are in Him.

So step forward—not in fear, but in confidence.

You’re not under a covering.
You’re in Christ.

  1. Superior read! I recently heard a Pastor give a warning to the church (leaders) about giving tithe/offerings stating: That the LORD will condem you if don’t give and give liberally to the church, after telling how he needs a sign and new walkway. This almost broke my heart to hear not because I believed it, but because I believed he was operating in a sprit of control and greed. I did go and look this (condem the Israelites) up in the Bible in the old testiment and I believe this is NOT meant for believers in this day. We are now saved by the grace of God by the sheding of JESUS CHRIST BLOOD! AMEN! GOD the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit IS my coverin and I am under no condemnation because Christ has paid the ultimate price for my salvation. And whom the Son has set free is free indeed. I believe this with all my soul and God knows that I dare NOT offend HIM because I fearfully love HIM. AMEN. I have left that church but the Bible tells me that the church is within. AMEN. l beseech You, LORD, You are the King of Glory, MY GOD whom I trust, no one is higher than You. Deal with me LORD and deal with all of us who say we love and follow YOU. All this I pray in the name of Jesus. The RISEN KING❤️‍🔥 AMEN 💐

    1. Oh I’m so sorry that happened to you. You are right. There are many pastors that manipulate people in greed, and my heart grieves when I see this. This morning, I saw a video of a guy commanding the congregation to give him a certain large amount at least, and he was like “I don’t care how you go back. Jesus will take care of it. I’m saying this because Jesus told me so”.

So apparently, the same Jesus who told to feed the 5000 because they have a long way back home and it’s dark doesn’t care how the congregation goes back home.

      Thanks for sharing your heart.
