Let’s be honest—there’s a whole lot of stuff flying around in church circles these days that sounds spiritual… but isn’t Scriptural.
I say this not as a critic from the outside, but as someone who is part of the charismatic stream of Christianity. I’ve seen the good, the powerful, the miraculous. But I’ve also seen the trend of slowly drifting from the Word of God and anchoring instead in emotions, visions, traditions, and “new revelations.”
And honestly, it reminds me a bit of how things went off track in Church history.
When Tradition Replaced Truth
One of the biggest issues that fueled the Protestant Reformation was how the Church had begun to elevate tradition and clerical authority over the Word of God. People couldn’t even read the Bible in their own language, and doctrines were being taught that had no root in Scripture.
Sound familiar?
Fast forward to today. While we may not have relics and indulgences like in the Middle Ages, we’ve got buzzwords and spiritual hierarchies being sold as if they were gospel truth.
Modern Buzzwords… with No Bible Backup
You’ve probably heard some of these:
“Issachar anointing” “Seer anointing” “Unlock your mantle” “Step into your next level” “Spiritual father covering” “Impartation from the general before he dies” “You need their anointing to operate in your calling”
Let’s stop for a second and ask the most important question:
Where is that in the Bible?
It’s not.
The apostles never taught it. Paul, who gave us deep revelation about spiritual gifts, identity in Christ, and how the church should function, never once told anyone to chase after someone else’s “mantle” or unlock hidden anointings by honoring a spiritual hierarchy.
If it were that important—don’t you think it would be in the epistles?
It Sounds Spiritual, But It Creates Elitism
Here’s the truth: these teachings often benefit one group—those at the top who are preaching them.
The more mystical the message, the more dependent people become on the “man of God” to receive what they supposedly don’t yet have. It breeds a culture of spiritual elitism, where only a select few “have it,” and the rest are left feeling like they haven’t arrived yet.
And how do you “arrive”? Usually by attending some conference, giving a seed, or receiving an impartation from someone more “anointed.”
It sounds holy. But it creates spiritual insecurity.
The Bible Is Still the Standard
Here’s what I’m urging you to do: Get back to the Word.
Just like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, test everything you hear. Even if it sounds deep. Even if it comes from a prophet, apostle, or leader you admire.
“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character… for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” — Acts 17:11
If Paul was examined, then so should every preacher.
Don’t be wowed by someone’s charisma. Don’t be intimidated by someone’s title. And please—don’t accept something just because it’s popular in a church circle.
People Are Walking Away from Churches Over This
Many are quietly leaving churches—not because they’ve lost faith, but because they’re exhausted. They’re tired of the manipulation. Tired of being told they’re not “activated” yet. Tired of chasing feelings instead of growing in grace.
They want Jesus. They want the Word. They want truth. But they’re getting a fog of spiritual fads.
Final Thought
You don’t need to unlock a mantle.
You don’t need someone else’s “level.”
You already have everything you need in Christ.
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him.” — 2 Peter 1:3
Don’t let anyone sell you what Jesus already gave you freely.
Open your Bible. That’s where the truth is.
And that’s where your confidence should rest.
