“Tap Into the Open Heaven”: But was it closed?

Walk into most charismatic conferences and you’ll hear someone shout:

“God is opening the heavens tonight!”
“We’re under an open heaven—tap into it!”

It sounds powerful. Spiritual. Expectant.

But if we’re honest, many believers are left confused.
Is heaven open or not? Do I need to do something to unlock it?

Let’s dive into Scripture and see what the Bible actually says.

Where Does This Phrase Come From?

The idea of “open heaven” appears in a few places:

1. Malachi 3:10 – “I will open the windows of heaven…”
   This is about God’s provision under the Old Covenant and is specifically connected to the law and tithing in Israel.
2. Ezekiel 1:1 – “The heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.”
   This was a one-time prophetic experience.
3. Matthew 3:16 – “…the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove…”
   This happened at Jesus’ baptism.

That’s about it. The idea of a “perpetually closed heaven” over believers is simply not biblical.

The Heaven Is Already Open—Permanently

The moment Jesus was baptized and the heavens opened (Matthew 3:16), something new was happening: the Kingdom of God was breaking in.

From that point on, Jesus declared:

“The Kingdom of God is at hand.” (Mark 1:15)

And when He died, the veil in the temple tore in two (Matthew 27:51)—not to open a room, but to open access to the Presence.

He didn’t just open heaven—He brought it to us.

Ephesians 2:6 — You’re Already There

“God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”

You’re not trying to reach heaven.
You’re already seated there—in Christ.

You don’t tap into the open heaven. You live from it.

What’s the Danger in This Buzzword?

1. It implies heaven is conditionally closed.
   As if your worship, giving, or effort can toggle it open.
2. It makes God seem reluctant.
   Like He’s withholding something that you need to earn access to.
3. It becomes a tool of manipulation.
   Leaders can guilt people into striving for what is already theirs in Christ.

You Don’t Need to Open What Jesus Already Opened

Colossians 1:13 says you’ve already been transferred to the Kingdom of His Son.
Ephesians 1:3 says you’re already blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places.

And Hebrews 10:19 says:

“We have boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus.”

Heaven isn’t something you knock on—it’s where you live.

Final Thought

The heavens aren’t closed until your worship is loud enough.

The windows of heaven don’t need you to tithe hard enough.

The Spirit isn’t released when enough people cry.

Heaven is open because Jesus opened it—once for all.

You don’t have to tap in.
You just have to believe and walk by the Spirit.
