“Pleading the Blood” — What the Bible Really Teaches

2–3 minutes

If you’ve been in charismatic circles long enough, you’ve probably heard it:

“Speak the blood over your house!”
“Speak the blood over your finances!”
“You need to plead the blood over your family!”

It’s often said with urgency and passion. The idea is that if you “speak the blood,” you invoke divine protection or power.

But here’s the question:

Is that what the Bible teaches us to do?

Let’s clear the noise and go back to the Word.

What Does the Blood of Jesus Do?

The blood of Jesus is central to the gospel. The New Testament is crystal clear about its power:

  • It redeems us (Ephesians 1:7)
  • It justifies us (Romans 5:9)
  • It cleanses us (1 John 1:7)
  • It gives us bold access to the Father (Hebrews 10:19)
  • It has already defeated the enemy (Revelation 12:11)

So yes, the blood is powerful—but it works because Jesus shed it, not because we speak it like a formula.

Is “Pleading the Blood” a Biblical Practice?

Short answer: no.

Nowhere in Scripture are believers told to “plead” or “speak” the blood like a magic phrase.

Not once did Jesus say to the disciples, “Plead My blood over your situation.”
Neither did Paul say, “Speak the blood before entering a dangerous place.”
Not once did Peter say, “The reason I survived prison was because I pled the blood.”

It’s not there.

So Where Did It Come From?

The practice of “pleading the blood” came out of revivalist traditions in the early 20th century.
It was rooted in sincere faith—but the language began to drift toward incantation-style Christianity, where spiritual authority was reduced to speaking certain phrases.

But the power of the blood isn’t activated when you speak it—it’s applied by faith.

The Power of the Blood Is in Believing, Not Chanting

“Having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” — Romans 5:9

“In Him we have redemption through His blood…” — Ephesians 1:7

These are not things we speak, they are truths we believe.

You don’t “apply” the blood like paint.
You receive the benefits of the blood by faith.

The Danger of Buzzword Christianity

When we start turning gospel truths into mantras, we can begin to:

  1. Trust our words instead of God’s finished work.
You’re not protected because you said “the blood” ten times. You’re protected because you’re in Christ.
  2. Treat Jesus like a genie.
Speaking the blood becomes a ritual, not a relationship.
  3. Forget the real weapon: faith.“This is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (1 John 5:4)

Final Thought

The blood of Jesus doesn’t need to be spoken—it needs to be believed.

You don’t plead the blood like a legal argument. You stand in it confidently like a child of God.

So yes, thank God for the blood. Celebrate it. Sing about it. Meditate on it.

But don’t turn it into a ritual.

The blood has already spoken on your behalf.
Now you simply believe—and rest.
