“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”
— Galatians 5:18
Have you ever heard someone say, “Holy Spirit, please lead us!” in a prayer?
Sounds super spiritual, right? But if we really think about it… that’s like asking water to be wet.
Leading us is exactly what the Holy Spirit does. That’s His job. That’s His promise. That’s part of the New Covenant. Jesus didn’t send the Spirit to be passive or hide in the background — He sent Him to counsel, teach, guide, and remind us of everything He said (John 14:26, John 16:13). The Spirit is always leading.
The question is… are we walking?
It’s Not a Leading Problem. It’s a Listening Problem.
Imagine this:
My kid blatantly ignores everything I say all day long. Throws toys, jumps on the couch, eats dessert before dinner — and then comes up to me and says, “Dad, can you please guide me?”
I’d probably blink a few times and say, “What do you think I’ve been doing this whole time?”
That’s often what our prayers sound like when we ask the Spirit to lead us — as if He’s not already doing it.
But Paul doesn’t pray for the Spirit to lead believers. He simply says:
- Walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
- Live by the Spirit (Galatians 5:25)
Not once does he say, “Beg the Spirit to lead you.” Why? Because that’s already happening. The command is not about getting guidance — it’s about responding to it.
So What Should We Pray?
Instead of saying, “Holy Spirit, lead me” (which He already is), maybe the better prayer is:
- “Thank you that you are helping me to walk in step with You.”
- “Thank You for leading me — help me listen.”
- “I trust Your voice more than mine.”
- “Thank you that you teach me to follow, even when it’s uncomfortable.”
The leading is guaranteed. The walking? That’s where faith meets obedience.
Bottom Line:
You’re not under the Law. You’re under grace. You’re led by the Spirit. That’s not a maybe — it’s a reality if you’re in Christ. So let’s stop asking the Spirit to do what He’s already doing, and start focusing on aligning with the One who never stops leading.
