Let’s talk about something that often gets misunderstood in Christian circles—the fruit of the Spirit. You’ve probably heard it taught like a checklist. “Lord, please give me more patience… more self-control… I just need more joy!” But here’s the thing: the fruit of the Spirit isn’t a wish-list—it’s your birthright in Christ.
Paul says it like this in Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control… If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”
That means if you live by the Spirit—if you’re born again—then these things are already in you. Not one day. Not after 40 days of fasting. Not if you “try hard enough.”
They’re already yours. You have love. You have joy. You have patience. It’s not something you’re trying to get from God—it’s something you’re learning to walk in.
Why Don’t I Feel It Then?
Fair question. Because you are looking for it in the flesh. You will see that your spirit is one with the spirit of the Lord, and you see these fruits manifesting from within you.
A New Nature Built-In
Let me share a little story.
When my daughter was born, the doctor handed her to me while my wife was still in recovery. She gave me a bottle and said, “Just touch the nipple to her chin. She’ll know what to do.”
And she did. She found the bottle and started drinking—even though she had never seen one in her life.
I was amazed.
How did she know?
She just came out of the womb, but she already knew how to feed.
Because she was made that way.
And so are you.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come.”
That means love, joy, peace, and all the rest—they’re not foreign to you anymore. They’re not “goals”—they’re part of your new spiritual DNA. Just like a newborn instinctively knows how to drink milk, your spirit already knows how to walk in love, patience, and self-control.
So What Do I Do?
Stop striving and start resting. Rest in the truth that you’re already equipped. When stress shows up, don’t look at your feelings—look at the Spirit inside you. When you’re tempted to snap, remember you’re not someone who tries to be gentle—you are gentle in Christ.
Let the fruit of the Spirit rise from within you. It’s not about gritting your teeth and forcing it. It’s about surrendering to who you already are. You never see a tree grunting to bear a fruit, but rather it bears the fruit. Similarly, don’t struggle for it- live in the Spirit, live in love, and it will come.
Remember, you’re not working toward love. You’re working from it.
So go ahead, walk by the Spirit—you were made for it.
