We all have those moments—something triggers you, and boom… out comes the outburst.
Or someone else is thriving while you’re stuck in neutral, and suddenly jealousy creeps in like an uninvited guest.
And what’s the usual response?
“Gotta get better at this. I need to calm down. I need to stop being jealous. I need more self-control!”
But trying to manage anger or jealousy with more effort is like putting a Band-Aid on a volcano. It might feel like progress—but it doesn’t fix the root.
“For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…” — Galatians 5:17
These reactions come from the flesh—not from the real you. And here’s the good news: you don’t fight the flesh by disciplining it into submission. You win by walking in the Spirit.
Why Willpower Fails
We’ve all tried it. “I won’t get mad this time.”
“I’ll just ignore how jealous I feel.”
But 10 minutes later, we’re snapping at someone or scrolling through social media stewing over someone else’s win.
Why?
Because the flesh doesn’t respond to threats. It responds to truth.
The truth that says, you’re already loved. You’re already accepted. You’re already full.
You’re not missing anything in Christ.
“You are complete in Him…” — Colossians 2:10
That’s what quiets jealousy. That’s what tames anger. Not guilt. Not self-effort. But truth and grace.
Walk It Off
The answer isn’t “stop being angry” or “stop being jealous.”
It’s: walk by the Spirit.
When you’re walking by the Spirit, you’re walking in love, peace, patience, kindness… you know, the good stuff (Galatians 5:22–23).
And guess what? There’s no room for jealousy when you’re content. There’s no place for anger when you’re at peace.
The Spirit doesn’t suppress anger and jealousy. He replaces them.
So don’t try to wrestle those emotions down.
Just turn on the light. Walk in the Spirit—and the flesh loses its voice.
