“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25 (ESV)
We’ve probably all heard someone say, “You need to access your spirit man,” or “The Holy Spirit won’t lead you if you do this or that.” But hang on—Romans 8:9 says something totally different:
“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9)
So, if you’ve placed your faith in Jesus, then yes, you are in the Spirit. No striving, no unlocking, no begging God to lead you. You’ve already been brought into a new realm. The Holy Spirit isn’t out there somewhere—He’s in you. You’re not trying to get into Christ. You’re already there, because He brought you in the moment you believed. And because you are in Christ, you received the promise of the Holy Spirit.
Led Constantly, Not Occasionally
Romans 8:14 is super clear:
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”
If you’re God’s child, you are led by the Spirit. Not occasionally. Not only when you fast or feel “spiritual.” Not only after hours of worship. You’re led because you’re His. That’s your default setting.
That’s why constantly asking God to “lead me” can feel a bit off. Imagine telling the GPS in your car, “Please direct me,” when it’s already doing that. The issue isn’t whether it’s leading—it’s whether you’re obeying. That’s the difference between living by the Spirit and walking by the Spirit.
Living vs. Walking — What’s the Difference?
To live by the Spirit is about your position—it’s who you are. It’s your address. You’ve moved into the Spirit neighborhood, permanently. You’re seated in Christ (Ephesians 2:6), sealed with the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), and nothing can change that.
But walking by the Spirit is about your choices—your daily lifestyle. It’s the steps you take within that new address. Paul’s saying in Galatians 5:25, “Hey, if you’re already in the Spirit, then let your walk reflect that reality.”
The Broadcast War: Flesh vs. Spirit
Earlier in the same chapter, Paul talks about the flesh and the Spirit being in opposition:
“For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh…” (Galatians 5:17)
It’s like two radio stations broadcasting at the same time. The flesh will scream its desires—bitterness, pride, selfishness, envy. But the Spirit speaks, too—peacefully, clearly, consistently. He’s always showing you a better way.
You don’t need to manufacture that guidance or beg for it. Just tune in. He’s already on.
You Can Walk Differently — Because You Are Different
Paul never tells you to become someone new. He says, “Walk worthy of the calling you’ve received” (Ephesians 4:1). Why? Because you’ve already received it.
The Spirit is always leading you away from what doesn’t belong in your life and toward the life that flows from your true identity in Christ. If we walk by the Spirit, Paul says in Galatians 5:16, we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. It’s not a threat—it’s a promise.
Final Thought
You’re already alive in the Spirit. That’s settled.
So today, walk like it.
Take a breath. Listen. Trust the One who already lives in you. He’s got the map. You just have to follow His steps.
