“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”
— Galatians 5:18
This verse gets tossed around a lot. And unfortunately, like many things in Scripture, it sometimes gets twisted into yet another performance checklist.
People read it like this: “You’re only not under the Law if you’re perfectly walking by the Spirit. But if you’re not, well… back under the Law you go!”
and runs the spiritual treadmill.
But here’s the thing — that’s not what Paul is saying. Let’s dig in.
It’s Not About Your Performance
In the original Greek, the word “if” (εἰ) in Galatians 5:18 is conditional, sure — but not in the way we often hear it. It’s not saying “if you allow the Spirit to lead you…” as if it’s all on you. The verb “led” is in the passive voice — meaning you’re the one being led, and the action is on the Spirit, not you.
It’s describing a state of being. If the Spirit is leading you (which He is, if you’re born again), then you’re not under the Law. That’s a statement of fact, not a warning or threat.
So Wait — Are We Always Being Led?
Yes. If you are in Christ, you are led by the Spirit. That’s part of the package deal.
Now, walking by the Spirit — that’s your experience of His leading. That’s where choices come in. But the leadership of the Spirit doesn’t come and go based on your behavior.
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would counsel us, guide us into all truth, and be with us forever (John 14:16, John 16:13). And He’s faithful to do that.
Then What About the Law?
Paul says plainly: “You are not under the Law.” Not sometimes, not when you’re doing well spiritually, not unless you mess up. If you’re in Christ, you’re under grace, not Law (Romans 6:14).
So when someone says, “Well, without the Law, people are just going to sin like crazy!” — they’re missing the point entirely.
The Spirit doesn’t lead people into sin — He leads us into truth, righteousness, and freedom. This whole idea that grace makes people reckless? That’s just not biblical. In fact, it’s the Law that stirs up sin (Romans 7:5). But the Spirit brings life.
From the Tutor to the Teacher
Paul calls the Law a tutor — one that led us to Christ. But now that Christ has come, we’ve graduated. The Spirit is now our guide. We’re not left to figure it out alone. We’re not “lawless.” We’re Spirit-led — and that’s way better.
So breathe easy. You’re not under the Law anymore. You’re not bouncing back and forth between Law and grace like a spiritual ping-pong ball. You are being led by the Spirit — and He’s really good at what He does.
