What does it mean to be Blessed with Abraham? : Gal 3:9

3–5 minutes

In the last blog we saw that it wasn’t the physical descendants of Abraham who were heirs to the blessing, but rather those of faith.

Paul continues in Galatians 3:9,

“So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.”

We, believers are blessed with Abraham. But what are these blessings. Let’s have a look:

The Abrahamic Covenant: A Promise for All Nations

At the heart of our discussion is the Abrahamic Covenant, recorded in Genesis 12:1-3. God’s promise to Abraham was multi-layered:

“In you All families will be Blessed”

In you all the families of the earth will be blessed. The ultimate fulfilment of this was when we received the Holy Spirit. As Gal 3:14 says:

in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. (Gal 3:14).

We have received the Spirit of God, and that is the greatest blessing which God had promised every believer. Gal 4:6 says:

Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

We received the Holy Spirit, because we are sons of God! That is a great privilege. We are not bondservants, slaves or even servants. We are sons of God, and heirs!

“I will bless you, And make your name great.”

This was a promise to Abraham and a promise to us. But it has been fulfilled in Christ. Eph 2:19 says “Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household“.  We are part of the greatest family ever! When we are part of the same household, we all use the same Name. Guess which name we use? The Name of Jesus! Eph 1:22 says “And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church“, which is us. So we have a great name. We have a reputation, because we are one with spirit of the Lord (1 Cor 6:17). Moreover we are kings and priests (Rev 1:6). So, walk like it!

“And so you shall be a blessing.”

God intended Abraham not only to be blessed but also to be a conduit of blessings to others. This means every believer is uniquely positioned to impact their world. When we operate from the Spirit, our lives become living testimonies of God’s grace, whether in the workplace, our communities, or our personal relationships.

Living as a Blessing: A Personal Testimony

I experienced this transformation firsthand. For years, I used to work in companies but was never happy there, not because the job was bad but because my attitude wasn’t right. I used to find ways to not like my regular job, while on the other hand I loved helping out in church. In terms of effort, I put my best effort in church and put the bare minimum in my office. But then, the Lord reminded me that I was a blessing not only within the walls of the church but in every sphere of life. That was my heritage!

This revelation reshaped my perspective on work and ministry. I began to see every task, every interaction, as an opportunity to be a blessing. I realized that I have the life of God in your veins, you have the Spirit of God who raised Jesus Christ from the dead oozing out of you. When I lay hands on the sick they shall recover. Isn’t that a blessing? When I speak life to someone’s life it happens. Isn’t that a blessing? Believer, you need not go out and preach out loud like others do, but you have opportunities to be a blessing everyday, every second and that is who you are! The world is your canvas. Paint it!

Embracing Your Inheritance

We are blessed in Christ, Eph 1:3 says that we are blessed with every spiritual blessing. Every!

So start reading the Word with a new perspective—not like a book of stories, but as the record of your forefathers. Read it and believe it like you would a will that detailed your inheritance. Enjoy the riches that are yours by virtue of the new birth. Discover for yourself that you truly are an heir to the limitless resources of the family of God!

Speak the Word with confidence:

“The blessing of Abraham comes on me through Jesus Christ. I receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. I am an heir to the promise!”
(Galatians 3:14, 29)

Remember, it is not about our efforts; it’s about our faith. As the Spirit transforms us, every area of our life—spiritual and natural—is infused with God’s abundant blessings.
