“And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.
When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”— Hebrews 1:3 (NASB)
Hebrews opens not with a command but with a breathtaking vision of Christ. Before the writer ever speaks of faith, endurance, or obedience, he lifts our eyes to the Son—His glory, His nature, His power, His finished work, and His eternal reign.
And right at the center of this description stands one of the most astonishing statements in all Scripture:
“He upholds all things by the word of His power.”
This is not poetic exaggeration. It is a theological reality grounding the entire universe.
1. “Upholds” — pherōn (φέρων): The Dynamic Power of the Son
The Greek word used here is φέρων (pherōn), the present active participle of pherō (φέρω).
Core Meaning:
- to carry
- to bear
- to sustain
- to bring forth
- to move forward
This is not a passive holding. It is continuous, active, purposeful sustenance.
Christ is not a cosmic pillar holding up creation like Atlas.
He is the living, moving, sovereign Lord who carries creation forward toward its appointed destiny.
Early Christian Insight
Commentators throughout church history have marveled at this word. Chrysostum summarized it this way:
Creation was brought out of nothing by His Word;
but it is a greater miracle still that He keeps it from returning to nothing.
Chrysostom beautifully writes that this sustaining activity is even “a greater work than creation,” for creation brought things out of nothing, but providence keeps everything from collapsing back into nothingness.
2. Upholding as Ruling, Governing, and Directing All Things
Some interpreters also note that pherōn may include the nuance of governing and disposing of all things.
This includes both:
A. His divine providence
The ongoing, sovereign management of creation.
B. His Messianic authority
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (Matt. 28:18).
He rules over heavens and earth.
The phrase is not only about holding creation together; it’s about directing creation toward God’s final purpose.
3. Held Together and Moved Forward by the Word of His Power
Hebrews says He sustains all things by “the word of His power”—not “the power of His word.”
The structure is intentional.
- The power is the source.
- The word is the expression of that power.
The Greek word for “word” here is rhēma, meaning spoken word, uttered command, active expression.
Jesus rules creation not by effort, strain, or struggle—but simply by speaking.
Every moment of the universe is upheld by the same voice that called light out of darkness.
This is why Paul can say:
“In Him all things hold together.”— Colossians 1:17
Not only held together—but carried forward.
The universe is not static.
History is not random.
Your life is not drifting.
Everything is being moved toward God’s sovereign consummation, and the Son Himself is doing the carrying.
4. The Same Son Who Upholds All Things Has Purified Our Sins
Hebrews ties cosmic power to redemptive power in one sentence:
“…when He had made purification of sins, He sat down…”
The One who sustains the universe is the One who purified our sins. The One who carries galaxies is the One who carried our judgment. The One who governs history is the One who entered history to save us.
And after He completed purification—fully, finally, once for all—He sat down at the right hand of God.
No Old Testament priest ever sat down. Their work was never finished. But this Priest sat down—because His work is perfectly finished.
5. Why This Matters for Your Daily Life
A. Your world is not out of control.
The same Christ who holds galaxies holds you.
B. Your salvation is not fragile.
The One who sustains creation sustains your righteousness.
C. Your future is secure.
He doesn’t just maintain creation—
He moves it toward God’s appointed end.
D. Your faith rests on a Person, not performance.
The One who purified your sins is enthroned forever.
Conclusion: The Majesty of the Son
Hebrews begins by showing us Jesus as:
- the radiance of God’s glory
- the exact imprint of His nature
- the Upholder of all things
- the One who finished purification
- the enthroned King forever
If He holds the universe by His word,
He can hold your life, your future, your salvation, and your every need.
And He carries all of it—not with strain—but with sovereign joy and unstoppable power.
