Yelling Doesn’t Work—Not at Home, and Not in Church

2–3 minutes

A few weeks ago, my nephews came over during spring break. The oldest is in 10th grade and, like many teens, he’s still figuring out what he wants to do in life. During dinner, my parents—his grandparents—got a bit worked up about his future. The tone shifted. Voices rose. The message was loud and clear: “You’re not taking this seriously enough!”

I sat there thinking… this is exactly how a lot of us try to “fix” things—by yelling, pushing guilt, applying pressure, and hoping something changes.
But it rarely does.

And sadly, the Church can fall into the same pattern.

Instead of reminding believers of who they are in Christ—righteous, holy, sanctified, blameless (Colossians 1:22)—many churches resort to spiritual scolding.
The sermons sound more like motivational lectures or performance reviews:
“You’re not doing enough.”
“You’re not walking right.”
“You need to get serious!”

Sure, correction has its place. But if all we hear is what we’re not, then we’re just putting people back under the very system Jesus freed us from.

The Law Pushes Performance—But Grace Produces Change

See, the Law is about behavior management. It shouts what we need to do, but gives no power to do it. It’s like yelling at a plant to grow without watering it.
And Paul knew this firsthand.

“The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase…”
(Romans 5:20)

“When we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us…”
(Romans 7:5)

So what’s the answer? Try harder? Obey more?
Follow Moses?

No. The answer is more radical:

Death.

“You also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another… in order that we might bear fruit for God.”
(Romans 7:4)

That’s not just poetry. That’s the Gospel.

At salvation, you didn’t just get forgiven—you died to the Law.
The Law no longer owns you. You’re not bound by the written code anymore.

“By dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, not in the old way of the written code.”
(Romans 7:6)

Real Change Happens When We Know Who We Are

You want to bear fruit?
You want to serve God with joy instead of pressure?
You want to walk in freedom?

There’s only one way: live by the Spirit.

Because the goal of Christianity isn’t behavior management. It’s Jesus Himself.
He’s your source. He’s your power. He’s the one who bears fruit through you—not by law, but by love.
Not by rules, but by relationship.

So whether it’s a 10th grader feeling lost, or a believer stumbling in their walk, the answer isn’t to yell louder. It’s not guilt or fear. It’s reminding them:
You’re deeply loved. You belong to Christ. You’ve been made new.

And when people know who they are, that’s when things start to change.
