Can You Be a Christian and Still Struggle with Anxiety?

2–4 minutes

“Why are you anxious? Have faith”

This is something which I have heard, and also something which I myself have regrettably told people (yeah, I know).

And usually, it comes with a verse:

“Do not be anxious about anything.” – Philippians 4:6

At first glance, it sounds convincing.

If the Bible says “don’t be anxious,” then anxiety must mean something is wrong with your faith… right?

But let’s slow down and actually think about this.

A More Honest Look at Scripture

The Bible is not a book full of emotionally perfect people.

It’s actually the opposite.

It’s filled with people who loved God deeply… and still struggled deeply.

Take Elijah, for example. This is a man who called fire down from heaven.

And yet, in 1 Kings, he reaches a point where he says:

Elijah said “I’ve had enough, Lord… take my life.”

That’s not mild discouragement. That’s despair.

Or David in Psalm 42:

David said “Why, my soul, are you downcast?”

He’s literally talking to his own soul because of how heavy things feel.

And Moses?

In Exodus 4, he’s overwhelmed, anxious, and full of self-doubt:

Moses said “What if they don’t listen to me?”

These are not people lacking faith.

These are people walking with God in the middle of struggle.

Does Anxiety Mean You Don’t Trust God?

This is where a lot of us get stuck.

“I just feel like anxiety means you don’t trust God.”

It sounds spiritual.

But it’s not actually biblical.

Because if that were true… we would have to say something shocking:

That Jesus Himself lacked trust.

Jesus Was Deeply Troubled

In the garden before the cross, Jesus wasn’t calm and composed.

He was overwhelmed.

Scripture tells us He was in such deep distress that He sweat drops like blood.

That’s not metaphorical calmness.

That’s intense anguish.

But what did He do with it?

He didn’t suppress it.

He didn’t pretend it wasn’t there.

He brought it to the Father.

“Not my will, but yours be done.”

So… Is Feeling Anxious a Sin?

No.

It’s human.

The issue isn’t whether you feel anxiety.

The question is:

What do you do with it?

“God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear”

Some might say:

“But the Bible says God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear.”

Yes—that’s true.

But that verse doesn’t mean you’ll never feel fear.

It means fear doesn’t get to rule you.

There’s a difference between:

  • Feeling fear
  • Living under fear

One is human.

The other is bondage.

What Do You Do With Anxiety Then?

You don’t shame it.

You don’t hide it.

You bring it to God.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

Notice what it doesn’t say:

“Fix your anxiety, then come to God.”

It says:

Bring it as it is.

You’re Not Disqualified

One of the most powerful verses in this conversation is this:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

God doesn’t wait for you to become emotionally strong before He works in you.

He meets you in your weakness.

Final Thought

So can you love Jesus… and still struggle mentally?

Yes.

Not only is it possible—

it’s actually where many people meet Him most deeply.

You are not disqualified because you struggle.

You are not less spiritual because you feel anxious.

You are deeply seen… right there in it.

Reflection Question

Instead of asking,

“Why am I feeling this?”

Maybe ask:

“What would it look like to bring this honestly to God today?”
