Many believers wrestle with this question: What does God truly desire from us? Is it our good deeds, our devotion, or something more profound? The Bible provides clarity—faith in Jesus and a heart that genuinely seeks to please Him.
Faith and the Desire to Please God
Hebrews 11:6 states, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.” This means that no matter how many good works we do, without faith in Jesus, they do not bring us closer to Him. In John 6:28-29, people asked Jesus what they must do to carry out God’s work. His response was simple yet profound:
“This is the work that God asks of you: that you believe in the One whom He has sent.”
Our faith in Christ is what pleases God. Good works should flow from our faith, not replace it. When we focus solely on deeds without trust in Christ, we miss the essence of God’s grace.
The Trap of Performance-Based Religion
Many of us have fallen into the trap of thinking that our worth in God’s eyes depends on how well we perform. We may believe that if we do everything perfectly, we will earn His approval, but if we fail, He will reject us.
This mindset can be damaging. It creates anxiety, fear, and a cycle of striving for perfection that God never intended for us. As believers, we are called to trust in His love and grace rather than living in fear of rejection.
Many of us live with this mindset in our spiritual lives. We assume God’s love is conditional—that He will only accept us if we are perfect. But the Bible teaches us otherwise.
God’s Love is Not Based on Performance
Ephesians 1:6 (KJV) says, “We are made acceptable in the Beloved.” Our acceptance by God is not based on what we do, but on our faith in Jesus Christ.
We are not called achievers—we are called believers. If our relationship with God was based on achievement, we would be constantly anxious, never feeling at peace. But God wants us to rest in His grace.
When we focus on God’s forgiveness, mercy, and love, rather than our own shortcomings, we find joy and true freedom in our relationship with Him.
Do You Trust God’s Word or Your Feelings?
One of the greatest challenges in faith is learning to trust God’s Word over our emotions. Our feelings can be unreliable—they change with circumstances, moods, and external influences. But God’s truth remains constant.
If we rely on our emotions to determine our standing with God, we will be unstable in our faith. Instead, we must choose to believe what God says about us. His love is unchanging, His grace is sufficient, and His acceptance of us in Christ is eternal.
Conclusion: Resting in Faith
To please God, we must:
- Have faith in Jesus – This is the foundation of our relationship with Him.
- Desire to please Him – Not out of fear, but out of love and gratitude.
- Reject the lie of performance-based acceptance – God does not love us based on our perfection but on His grace.
- Trust His Word over our feelings – His promises are more reliable than our emotions.
As we embrace these truths, we find peace, joy, and the freedom to walk confidently in God’s love. Instead of striving anxiously for approval, we can rest in the assurance that we are already accepted in Christ.
