Are You Found in Him… or in Your Pay-check, Works etc?: Phil 3:9

3–4 minutes

Paul’s words in Philippians 3 hit deep if we let them. He says:

“…that I may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ…” (Phil. 3:9)

It’s easy to read that and think, “Yes, of course, my righteousness is in Christ.” But stop for a second and ask: Are you really found in Him? Are you recognized in Him—right now, in how you think, how you live, and how you trust?

What Does It Even Mean to Be “Found” in Him?

The Greek word used here is heuriskō (G2147), which means to find, discover, or be recognized as. Paul was “in Christ” . His union with Christ was possible only because God imputed Christ’s righteousness to him so that it was reckoned by God as his own (see notes on Rom. 1:17; 3:24). He was saying: I want to be seen, discovered, recognized as being in Him—not in myself, not in the Law, not in my good works, not in anything else.

That’s a big statement. He’s not just talking about salvation—he’s talking about identity, confidence, and trust.

Let’s be honest, it’s easy to say “God is my provider,” but then quietly have a “trust” in your pay check. It’s easy to say “My identity is in Christ,” but still get offended when someone doesn’t value you.

When Faith Was Raw: My Testimony

My wife and I were in Europe years ago and facing some financial tight spots. There were moments we had no backup plan. No buffer. We prayed in faith—and God showed up. There was even a time the law required us to pay €700 for insurance, and we simply didn’t have it. We prayed. A few weeks later, the law changed—and we paid just €98. A miracle!

We trusted in Him- and there was nothing else to lean on. No fallback. Just Him.

Now? We’re in Canada. We’ve got insurance, credit cards, a steady income. Life is stable. But that desperate, dependent trust? It’s not as raw anymore. Many times we swipe our credit cards before God gets the chance to do a miracle.

So tell me? Are we “recognized” to be trusting in Him?

Why Miracles Are More Common in Simpler Places

You hear stories of miracles happening more in places like India, Africa, and rural parts of the world. Why? Because people have to trust God. They don’t have a dozen safety nets. It’s Him or nothing.

But here in the developed world, we’ve got a plan B… and C… and D. And sometimes, even though we say “I trust God,” we’re really leaning on our systems, our jobs, and our calendars. But faith has no plan B.

We say we’re in Christ—but are we found in Him?

Do We Trust Christ or Our Résumé?

Paul listed a pretty impressive résumé: tribe of Benjamin, circumcised on the 8th day, Hebrew of Hebrews, Law-abiding Pharisee. But he said he counted it all as rubbish (literally dung) for the sake of knowing Christ.

Why? Because those things, though profitable in the world, can subtly steal your trust. They can become what you lean on instead of Christ. And when your value is tied to your job, your background, your achievements, or even your ministry title—you’re no longer found in Him.

Here’s a Test:

  • How do you feel when people treat you like a “regular” person?
  • Are you upset when people don’t recognize your credentials or status?
  • Can you happily serve without needing applause?
  • Would you still love and give if nobody ever noticed?
  • How’s your attitude when the next pay check doesn’t come on time?
  • Even in your worst week, do you see yourself as righteous?

Paul’s goal wasn’t to be seen for what he did. His goal was to be seen in Christ.

🎯 Final Thought: Is Christ Enough?

What if your job disappeared?
What if nobody clapped when you served?
What if no one ever knew what you gave up for Jesus?

Would Christ still be enough?

Let’s live lives that scream one thing: “I want to be found in Him—nothing else matters.”
