I recently read a wonderful post in FB that spoke about this, and I thought I’d share that take here again.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8
There is a quiet order in the gospel that changes everything:
Grace moves first. Faith responds.
Most of us were taught—explicitly or subtly—that faith is what gets God moving. If we believe harder, pray longer, or stand stronger, then God will act.
But Scripture shows us something very different.
The Christian life does not begin with faith.
It begins with grace.
Grace is God in action.
Faith is our response to that action.
Ephesians 2:8 doesn’t leave room for confusion: “By grace you are saved through faith.” Grace comes first. God initiates. Humanity receives. This rhythm never changes.
Grace is not God waiting to see what we will do.
Grace is God acting first—loving, giving, reconciling, indwelling.
Faith does not persuade God.
Faith simply receives what God has already provided in Christ.
That’s why faith is never a work.
Faith doesn’t add to grace.
AND Faith doesn’t improve grace.
FINALLY Faith doesn’t activate grace.
Faith is the open posture of the heart that says,
“Yes, Lord. I receive.”

When the Order Is Reversed
Whenever we reverse this divine order, striving begins.
When faith tries to initiate, it becomes effort.
When grace is seen as a response, it becomes reward.
Suddenly prayer becomes pressure.
Waiting becomes anxiety.
Trust becomes technique.
We start trying to produce outcomes instead of resting in what God has already accomplished.
But when grace acts and faith responds, something beautiful happens:
Rest replaces pressure.
Peace replaces performance.
Life begins to flow naturally.
This is the heart of the finished work.
Jesus did not make salvation possible—He made it complete.
We are not living toward victory.
We are living from victory.
Faith Is Receiving, Not Pushing
The Christian life is not maintained by human initiative.
It is sustained by continual reception.
We don’t live by trying to activate God.
We live by trusting what He has already done.
Grace is not something God releases in response to our faith.
Grace is the source—faith is the doorway.
This is why the New Covenant is not about effort, discipline, or spiritual pressure. It’s about abiding. About remaining. About receiving.
We don’t strive to enter rest.
We discover we were placed there already.
Grace acts.
Faith responds.
This is not only how salvation begins.
It’s how it continues.
A Simple Conversation
If you were to ask the question,
“How do I know when I’m living by faith?”
The answer would be simple:
When you stop trying to make something happen
and start trusting what God is already doing.
And if you followed up with,
“So faith doesn’t push—it receives?”
Yes.
Exactly.
Grace always moves first.
Faith simply agrees.
A Gentle Closing
If you’re tired of trying to make things happen…OR
If you feel pressure to produce outcomes…OR
If faith has started to feel heavy…
Come back to this simple truth:
God already moved.
Your role is not to initiate heaven.
Your role is to receive what heaven has already given.
Grace acts.
Faith responds.
And in that order, we finally find rest.
