How did God do miracles among you? By Performance or by faith?: Gal 3:4-5

1–2 minutes

We are discussing the two questions Paul asked the church in Galatia who were embracing legalism. We discussed the first question in the earlier blog.

Now Paul asks the second question-

“Does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you do it by the works of the Law or by hearing with faith?” (Gal 3:4-5)

It’s a wake-up call for anyone caught up in legalistic routines.

The Performance trap

Some folks argue that while we’re saved by faith, we still need to stick to the law afterwards. They say that Paul is only against the law for salvation, but after that we should keep the law.

But Paul is clear about what he is saying. He asks Hey when miracles happen among you, is it because of performance or because of faith? They would have answered faith. Remember even in Acts 3, when the onlookers were astonished when the lame man walked, Peter asked the same question Do you think it is because of our piety? Or in other words our performance had nothing to do with the result. It’s by faith and faith in the Name of Jesus!

So Paul is asking, doesn’t God work miracles in your life through faith, then why do you resort to performance based Christianity? From salvation to our everyday walk, it’s all about relying on faith and the Spirit.

Faith in the Name

So, stop performing your way into perfection. A lot of churches say to “come as you are” with faith, and then impose restrictions on them, and rules on them.

If it’s not because you fasted, performed and performed that God did miracles among you. God has provided for you, everything that pertains to life and godliness by his grace (2 Pet 1:3). Our Christian life started with faith, and should also continue with faith.

Let your life be a testament to living by the Spirit, where faith isn’t just a one-time decision at salvation, but the everyday heartbeat of your spiritual walk.
