Un-cursed: Part 2: Can Christians Be Under a Generational Curse?: Gal 3:13

5–7 minutes

There is a common teaching in churches about the generational curses. They believe that because of the sin of the parents or of generations before, a person is under a curse. They base it on verses like Exodus 20:3-6, Exodus 34:6-7, Numbers 14:16-18, and Deuteronomy 5:7-10: Exodus 34:6–7

And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.

Recurring means generational?

Recently, I heard someone teach that when there are similar issues or problems passed found in generations, that is a generational curse that needs to be broken. We see recurring issues happening in many families whether in sickness, addiction, or dysfunctional behaviors—across family generations and label these as “generational curses.”. But, does recurring means that it is a generational curse?

No!

People who teach this fail to see that the Bible is very clear that generational curses are not applicable to anyone!!

God: “Stop blaming Generational Curses”

In the Old covenant days there were generational curses. You can read about it in passages such as Exodus 34:6–7, Numbers 14:16–18, and Deuteronomy 5:7–10. But in Ezekiel 18, we read that its totally changed.

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers eat the sour grapes, But the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “you are surely not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore. Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die. (Ezekiel 18:1-4)

These proverbs were on generational curses, and God says that they are not supposed to blame it on generational curses anymore. He goes on to say in the same chapter:

The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. (Ezekiel 18:20)

In other words, it won’t be passed on from one generation to another. No generational curses!

Could it get more clear than this? The Bible asked to STOP using the generational curses as a crutch. It says that everyone will bear the punishment of their own sins. This was in Israel. But God speaks of an even better time.

A time of Even Better

When God spoke about the Israelites in Ezekiel 18, he said stop using generational curses as an excuse, but everyone will pay for their own sin. Father for father’s and son for his own. No passing down of sins or curses. But God spoke of a time when he goes a step further. He says “I will forgive their iniquity and sin I will remember no more”.

And that is the New covenant, which is the covenant of God with the believer. Not only are generational curses not applicable to a believer, our sins itself he doesn’t take into consideration, in Christ!

Hallelujah!

“In those days they will not say again, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’ “But everyone will die for his own iniquity; each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on edge. “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
(Jeremiah 31:29-34)

The New Testament reinforces this transformation. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 it is written, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” This declaration means that any negative legacy—including generational curses—has been nullified by the power of Christ’s resurrection. Believers now stand in a spiritual genealogy that traces directly back to God, not to a fallen past.

Recurring or not, solution is Authority!

So going back to the question of recurring problems in a believer’s family, why does it happen? It is not a generational curse, but rather if it is a spiritual attack, it is the devil attacking the same issue over and over again. So, how do you deal with it?

Authority and power. You have authority over every scheme of the enemy, and the enemy has no right over you. Use the authority and drive out those demons today! A lot of people hesitate saying that they needs to get their ducks in order, but here’s the thing- you are not under any curse, ducks in order or not. The Bible says in Gal 3:13:

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— (Gal 3:13)

The devil was scamming you to believe that you were under a curse, but not anymore. Kick him out of your house! Many believers have shared stories of overcoming a long line of chronic health issues that were once attributed to generational curses. After embracing the truth of their identity in Christ and using authority and power which they have in Jesus, these individuals experienced renewed health and hope.

You are a new Creation, the old has passed the New has come. You are not under a generational curse, but you are under an everlasting blessing!!!!
