“So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” —Romans 8:4
Paul’s statement in Romans 8:4 is huge. It’s not a throwaway line. He’s saying the righteous demand of the Law—the 613 commands, the whole covenant obligation—has already been fulfilled in us who are in Christ. Not because we finally managed to obey it all, but because Jesus did, and His Spirit now lives in us.
And if the Law’s requirement is fulfilled, then the blessings attached to obedience are also ours. Not because we’ve earned them, but because we’re united to the One who did.
Some people get nervous when you say this (“Isn’t that prosperity gospel?”). But these are God’s own words. We’re not making up blessings to hype people; we’re tracing the Bible’s storyline: the Law demanded, Christ fulfilled, and now the promises are “Yes” and “Amen” in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Let’s look at what those blessings actually are.
Core Passages for Blessings of Obedience
Here are the three major “blessing passages” under the Mosaic covenant:
- Deuteronomy 28:1–14 — Blessings promised to Israel for obeying the Law
- Leviticus 26:3–13 — Blessings for walking in God’s statutes
- Deuteronomy 7:12–15 — God’s love and covenant faithfulness tied to obedience
Under the old covenant, these were conditional. Under the new, Christ has met the condition, so we inherit the blessing by grace.
Blessings by Category + Verses
Here’s the breakdown of the blessings—one by one—with the verses that mention them. (Notice how often the same themes repeat.)

| Recognition by nations / fear by others | Deut 28:10 | Others see God’s name on you and respect you. |
| Abundant prosperity / increase again | Deut 28:11 | Abounding in fruitfulness, livestock, and crops. |
| Open heaven / rain / productivity of work | Deut 28:12 | God opens His good treasury to bless your work. |
| Lend but not borrow | Deut 28:12 | Economic strength instead of debt. |
| Head, not tail; above, not beneath | Deut 28:13 | Leadership and influence rather than subjection. |
| Full obedience / no turning aside | Deut 28:14 | Staying on God’s path brings continued blessing. |
| Peace, security, removal of fear | Lev 26:6 | “You shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid.” |
| Removal of harmful beasts, sword, danger | Lev 26:6 | Protection from threats in the land. |
| Eating to satisfaction; dwelling securely | Lev 26:5 | Provision and secure dwelling. |
| Multiplication / confirm covenant | Lev 26:9–10 | God looks favorably, multiplies you, and confirms His covenant. |
| God’s presence, walking with them | Lev 26:11–12 | “I will make My dwelling among you … walk among you.” |
| Freedom / upright walking | Lev 26:13 | Freedom from yokes of slavery; walking upright. |
That’s a lot of blessing! It covers identity, provision, protection, fruitfulness, presence, peace, influence—basically every dimension of life.
Well, wasn’t those promises only for Israel? Well, read this Who Is the Israel of God? Understanding Gal 6:15–16. We are the Biblical Israel, the Church, and these promises were meant for us from the very beginning.
“Isn’t This Just Prosperity Gospel?”
I am not into labelling what’s what. I am all for the blessings God has listed above, because that is part of our inheritance package. Well, if you don’t want it, that’s your prerogative but you have it if you need it.
The New-Covenant Lens
When you read these passages through the cross and resurrection, three things become clear:
- Christ fulfilled the Law’s requirement (Rom 8:4).
Every commandment, every “if you obey” clause—He met it perfectly. - Christ bore the Law’s curse (Gal 3:13).
Every “if you disobey” curse fell on Him at the cross. - All God’s promises are Yes in Him (2 Cor 1:20).
The blessings once conditioned on perfect obedience are now gifts of grace to those united to Christ.
That’s why you can open your Bible, see an Old Testament promise of God’s goodness, and—if it’s part of His covenant purposes—say with confidence, “That’s mine in Christ.” It may be fulfilled differently (some promises are national or physical in the OT but become spiritual and eternal in the NT), but the heart of it—God’s favor, presence, provision, and future—is yours.
Wrapping It Up
Romans 8:4 isn’t just about ethics; it’s about inheritance. The requirement of the Law is fulfilled in you by the Spirit, so you’re not striving for God’s blessing—you’re standing in it. And 2 Corinthians 1:20 means you can say “Amen” to every promise God has made in Scripture, because Jesus has already said “Yes” on your behalf.
That’s not hype. That’s gospel.
So next time you read Deuteronomy 28 or Leviticus 26, don’t read it with a heavy heart thinking “I can never measure up.” Read it with a grateful heart: “Jesus measured up, and in Him, I’m blessed.”
