Introduction
A popular teaching today says “Honour is a stepping stool to elevation and acceleration.”
You’ll often hear:
“The law of honour opens doors.”
“Honour brings mantles and double portions.”
“Who you honour determines how far you go.”
It sounds wise and spiritual — but it quietly replaces the gospel of grace with a system of spiritual hierarchy and performance.
Let’s look closely at why the so-called “Law of Honour” is not a law in the New Covenant, and why it subtly undermines the finished work of Christ.
Honour in Scripture Is a Fruit, Not a Formula
The Bible indeed calls us to honour:
“Outdo one another in showing honour.” — Romans 12:10
“Honour all people.” — 1 Peter 2:17
But this is relational, not transactional.
It’s the fruit of love, not a principle to unlock promotion.
Nowhere does the New Testament say, “Honour your pastor and you’ll accelerate,” or “Honour brings impartation.”
Honour is commanded because of Christ’s nature in us, not because it produces measurable rewards.
When honour is turned into a formula for success, it stops being love and becomes spiritual manipulation.
“Law of Honour” Confuses Covenant Contexts
Many teachings on honour quote Elijah and Elisha to claim that being close to a leader grants you their mantle.
But under the New Covenant, mantles are obsolete.
Hebrews 1:1–2 says:
“God, who in the past spoke to our ancestors through the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son.”
The Holy Spirit isn’t passed down through physical succession — He is poured out on all flesh (Acts 2:17).
Every believer receives the same Spirit, the same access, and the same inheritance (Romans 8:9, Ephesians 1:11).
So, Elisha’s story is not a pattern for mentorship-based impartation; it’s a shadow pointing to Christ, the One in whom all anointing now dwells.
There Is No “Law” of Honour in the New Covenant
The only law believers live under is the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2) and the law of love (John 13:34).
When honour is turned into a “law,” it turns grace into merit.
You can’t earn what grace has already given.
You don’t climb to higher realms through honour; you live from your seated position in Christ (Ephesians 2:6).
Honour may bring human recognition — but divine elevation comes by God’s sovereign grace, not by compliance to a system.
The Problem with the “Elevation and Acceleration” Narrative
This mindset produces several distortions:
1. It Creates Spiritual Elitism
Believers start measuring themselves by proximity to leaders instead of intimacy with Christ.
But Jesus said, “You are all brothers” (Matthew 23:8).
2. It Promotes Transactional Relationships
Honour becomes currency — “If I serve you, I’ll receive your mantle.”
That’s not discipleship; that’s spiritual commerce.
3. It Implies God’s Grace Is Unequal
If my growth depends on how I honour a human, then Christ’s finished work is incomplete.
But Scripture says:
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” — 2 Peter 1:3
True Honour in the Kingdom
True honour doesn’t flow upward alone; it flows everywhere.
- Honour God — by trusting His Word above systems.
- Honour people — because they bear His image.
- Honour leaders — with respect, not worship.
- Honour the weak — because God gives greater honour to the parts that lack it (1 Corinthians 12:24).
In Christ’s body, honour is mutual, not hierarchical.
No one stands between you and God. Every believer carries the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.
The Gospel Gives You What “Honour Laws” Promise
What the “law of honour” promises — inheritance, elevation, acceleration — is already yours in Christ.
“If children, then heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” — Romans 8:17
“Blessed be God… who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” — Ephesians 1:3
You don’t honour to gain inheritance; you honour because you already have it.
You don’t pursue mantles; you already carry the fullness of the Spirit.
You don’t need acceleration; you are already in God’s perfect timing.
Conclusion: Grace, Not Honour Laws
Honour is beautiful when it flows from love — but it becomes bondage when it’s turned into law.
Jesus didn’t call us to climb ladders of mentorship to earn mantles; He tore the veil so that all may enter freely.
So let’s honour others not to rise higher, but because Christ has made us one.
Let’s reject the “law of honour” and embrace the life of grace.
For in Christ, you already have everything you’re trying to earn.
“You are complete in Him.” — Colossians 2:10
