Did Paul Teach Revival? What the New Testament Really Says

2–3 minutes

If you’ve been around church circles long enough, you’ve heard it:
“Let’s fast for more anointing.”
“Pray that God would move in power!”
“Ask the Spirit to come down and stir revival in our land.”

It sounds spiritual. It sounds passionate. But have you ever wondered…
Did Paul ever talk like this?

Turns out, he didn’t.

Let’s look at Paul’s actual writings in the New Testament and analyze them statistically and thematically for mentions of:

  • Fasting for anointing
  • Seeking anointing
  • National or corporate revival
  • Asking churches to pray for revival or for God to “move”
  • Asking for more of the Holy Spirit or power
  • General revivalistic language (e.g., “come, Lord”, “move in power”)

Paul’s Mentions: A Reality Check

Category# of Times Paul Explicitly MentionsNotes
Fasting for anointing❌ 0Paul mentions fasting (2 Cor 6:5, 11:27), but never for anointing or power.
Seeking anointing❌ 0He says we already have the anointing (2 Cor 1:21-22).
National revival / corporate revival❌ 0He never asks for Israel or Rome to experience “revival”; he emphasizes personal transformation and gospel proclamation.
Asking church to pray for revival❌ 0Paul requests prayer often—but for boldness, open doors, and clarity, not revival. (e.g., Eph 6:19–20, Col 4:3–4)
Asking for God to move or “show up”❌ 0No such phrasing or concept. He believes God already is at work in believers (Phil 2:13).
Asking for more Holy Spirit/power❌ 0Paul never asks for more Spirit. He teaches that believers already have Him in fullness (Rom 8:9, Eph 1:13, 1 Cor 6:19).
Praying for deeper revelation✅ 3–4 timesEph 1:17, Eph 3:16–19, Col 1:9—asking for eyes to be opened to what we already have in Christ.

Paul never encourages believers to “seek anointing,” fast for revival, or ask God to show up.

Instead, his focus is radically different:

  • Christ is already in you. (Col 1:27)
  • You are already anointed. (2 Cor 1:21–22)
  • The Spirit already lives in you. (Rom 8:9)
  • God is already working in you. (Phil 2:13)
  • We don’t need to pray for revival. We need to believe the Gospel and walk in it.

So What Should We Pray?

Pray like Paul.

Pray for spiritual eyes to be opened (Eph 1:18),
Pray to be strengthened in your inner being by the Spirit (Eph 3:16),
Pray for boldness to share the gospel clearly (Col 4:3),
Pray to understand the love of Christ (Eph 3:19).

But don’t beg for what you already have.

Why This Matters

Modern revival language often sounds like we’re begging God to do what He already promised and accomplished in Christ.

If Paul were in our church today, he probably wouldn’t be crying out for God to come down.

He’d be reminding us that He already did.

“He who did not spare His own Son… how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”
(Romans 8:32)

You don’t need more revival.
You need more revelation of Jesus.

And when you see Him clearly, you’ll realize:
You’ve been running with Him all along.
