All Authority in Christ: Why the Devil Has None

3–4 minutes

As believers, one of the greatest truths we need to grasp is this: the devil has no authority over us. Jesus has already won the victory, and when we understand that, we can finally live free, bold, and unshaken.

All Authority Belongs to Jesus

After His resurrection, Jesus declared:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”— Matthew 28:18

The word He used for “authority” was exousia — not just raw power, but legal right. Think of it this way: a police officer can stop a car not because of brute strength, but because of the authority vested in him by the state. If necessary, he may use force (dunamis), but his badge carries the true weight.

In Luke 9:1 and Luke 10:19, Jesus gave His disciples both dunamis (power) and exousia (authority) over demons and diseases.

From the beginning, God gave humanity dominion (Gen. 1:26–28; Ps. 115:16). But when Adam and Eve disobeyed, they surrendered that authority to the devil (Rom. 6:16). That’s why, in Luke 4:5–6, Satan could offer Jesus “all the kingdoms of the world”—because humanity had handed them over.

But Jesus came to take it back. Through the cross, He stripped the enemy of his power (Heb. 2:14). Now, all authority has been restored to Him.

Exercising Our Authority

If Jesus has all authority, it means the devil has none.

As believers, we operate in that authority. Ephesians 1:18–20 reminds us that the same power that raised Christ from the dead now lives in us.

The devil may still attempt to intrude, like a thief who doesn’t need legal rights to break in. His strategy is deception. He roars like a lion (1 Pet. 5:8), but he isn’t one. He whispers lies to stir fear, because fear is the foothold he needs.

Picture this: a strong horse tied loosely to a plastic chair. The horse has all the power to walk free, but thinks it’s trapped. That’s how many believers live — bound not by Satan’s strength, but by his deception.

Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Many Christians live in unnecessary defeat simply because they don’t know the authority they carry in Christ.

Stories of Standing Firm

Ephesians 6:16 urges us to lift the shield of faith to quench every fiery dart of the enemy. When we know our authority, we don’t cower.

Smith Wigglesworth once awoke in the night sensing evil in his room. At the foot of his bed stood a dark figure — the devil himself. Wigglesworth calmly looked at him and said, “Oh, it’s you.” Then he rolled over and went back to sleep.

That’s the confidence of someone who knows the devil has no claim over them.

Living in Victory

So how do we walk this out?

  1. Know your authority in Christ. Fill your mind with God’s Word and renew your thinking.
  2. Take your stand. Don’t fear the enemy’s tactics — resist him and he must flee (James 4:7).
  3. Set others free. Don’t just live in freedom; bring freedom. Heal the sick, restore the broken, love without condition, and push back darkness wherever you go.

As Elizabeth Jordan in War Room declared against the devil: “You don’t have authority here!” — we too can kick him out of every area of our lives.

Final Thought

The devil has no authority — only what we hand him through fear or ignorance. Jesus holds it all, and He has given us the right to walk in His name.

So don’t just settle for survival. Rewrite your story. Live boldly. Stand firm. And let your life declare to the enemy:

“I know who I am in Christ — and you have no place here.”
