“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
A Truth That Transcends Context
The apostle John wrote this verse in the context of warning believers about the antichrist spirits in the world. These deceptive spirits spread false teachings and attempt to lead believers astray. However, John reassures us that because we belong to God, we have already overcome these forces. The reason? Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world. The beauty of this verse is that it is a general statement and can be used outside this context. John is stating a matter of fact.
We Are From God
As believers, we are born of God and one with Him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17). We are blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), and we have His divine nature within us (2 Peter 1:4). This means we operate from a position of victory, not defeat.
We Have Overcome
John states that we have overcome them—past tense. Why? Because Jesus has already triumphed over every power of darkness (Colossians 2:15). His victory is our victory. Many believers become anxious about the devil’s influence, but Scripture makes it clear that the devil’s only weapon is deception (John 8:44).
I remember when I was in Italy, there was this woman who shared that the devil was messing with one of her relatives, but she wouldn’t actually say the word “devil” because she thought it would just make things worse. She believed if she said his name, he’d get her attention and start attacking her. I told her not to worry about the devil because he’s the one who should be scared of us!
The devil doesn’t hold any power over us; all he’s got is tricks and lies, and that’s why we need to keep our minds sharp and be on guard. We really should stop acting like the devil is God’s major enemy or some kind of equal opposite force. Seriously! If God wanted to, He could just wipe the devil out in an instant, but He doesn’t because He handed the authority over to us to manage. The devil has no authority over you, but somehow we get all worked up about him. We end up talking about the devil way more than we give credit to God. Isn’t that just wild?
One in Us is Greater
The authority we have in Christ is not reserved for pastors or special ministers—it is given to every believer. Mark 16:17 states that believers will cast out demons in Jesus’ name. One powerful example of this was seen in the life of Smith Wigglesworth. One night, he was awakened by a sinister presence. When he turned and saw the devil himself, he simply said, “Oh, it’s only you,” blew out his candle, and went back to sleep. That is the level of confidence we should have in Christ’s authority.
Victory is Already Won
Many believers engage in long fasting and intense prayers, thinking they must defeat the devil through effort. At the end of the fast, they think that now God is handing out the “victory card”. But I’ve got news for you. God handed out the victory card the moment Christ resurrected from the dead. We are not striving for victory—we are walking from victory. Imagine returning home from vacation and finding a stray dog inside. Would you go to the authorities to reclaim your house, or would you simply command the dog to leave? The latter illustrates our authority in Christ. We do not plead for victory—we enforce the victory Jesus has already won.
Faith: The Key to Living in Victory
While victory is a settled reality, you need to believe it. Like I said before, the devil uses deception. One can be extremely faithful to God, and love and all that but still could be routinely oppressed by attacks of the devil. Remember that when John was talking about love, he was saying that there is a sort of inevitability that a child of God loves. But in this, he is informing them. You have overcome. But in the New Covenant, it is by faith, you may be faithful, but if you don’t have faith, you may not see the victory in action in the natural. However, that doesn’t change your victory int he spiritual. That is done in Christ Jesus. However, if you have faith and then, you will destroy the works of the devil.
