Lately, I’ve noticed something becoming more common in charismatic conversations.
People are afraid, watchful.
Not of sin.
Not of unbelief.
Not of forgetting who they are in Christ.
But of some spirit.
Someone is controlling? Must be a spirit.
Someone is intimidating? Must be a spirit.
Someone is manipulative? Must be a spirit.
Someone opposes leadership? Must be a spirit.
Someone is harsh? Must be a spirit.
And one label seems to appear again and again:
“Jezebel spirit.”
“Sennacherib spirit”
…and the list goes on.
Then new names appear.
And suddenly Christians begin living cautiously.
Analyzing everyone.
Questioning themselves.
Wondering:
Am I under attack?
Is someone operating in this spirit?
Do I need special warfare?
Is this why things are hard?
But I want to ask something simple.
Where does the New Testament teach believers to live this way?
We Have Become More Spirit-Conscious Than Christ-Conscious
There is something interesting in the New Testament.
Jesus talked a lot about:
- faith
- truth
- abiding
- identity
- Himself
Paul talked a lot about:
- being in Christ
- grace
- union with Christ
- renewing the mind
- finished work
But how much of the New Testament is spent teaching believers to identify named spirits?
Very little.
Yet today it can feel like we are building categories faster than Scripture does.
Instead of asking:
Is this person walking in Spirit or flesh?
we ask: What spirit is operating?
Instead of asking:
Am I believing truth?
we ask: Is the Jezebel spirit twisting my mind.
That shift changes the entire Christian life.
Jezebel in Scripture Is Not Presented as Your Daily Fear
Let’s slow down.
Yes, Scripture mentions Jezebel. In the Old Testament she was a real person.
In Revelation 2, Jesus references “that woman Jezebel” as symbolic language tied to false teaching and leading believers astray.
But notice something.
The New Testament never teaches believers: identify Jezebel spirits.
It never teaches: break Jezebel assignments.
It never teaches: discover whether someone carries Jezebel.
That framework gets imported into the text.
The concern in Revelation was deception and compromise. Not spirit hunting.
The Fear Creates a Bigger Problem Than the Label
This is where I think things become dangerous.
Because once fear enters— everything becomes spiritualized.
Strong personality?
Jezebel.
Disagreement?
Jezebel.
Leadership conflict?
Jezebel.
Direct communication?
Jezebel.
Soon people stop dealing with actual issues.
No communication.
No accountability.
No truth.
Just labels.
And ironically—fear starts controlling the church more than the supposed spirit ever could.
Christ Did Not Leave You Exposed
The New Testament picture of the believer is radically different.
Paul says:
“Having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”— Colossians 2:15
Disarmed.
Not partially weakened.
Disarmed.
Then Paul says:
“God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”— Ephesians 2:6
You are seated.
Not hiding.
Not exposed.
Not spiritually fragile.
You are in Christ. And Christ is not intimidated.
The Devil’s Main Weapon Is Not Control — It Is Accusation
One of the biggest shifts for me was realizing something.
The New Testament does not portray believers as constantly needing protection from “spirits”.
It repeatedly warns about:
lies
deception
accusation
forgetting truth
Paul says:
“Take every thought captive…”— 2 Corinthians 10:5
Notice.
Thoughts.
Not hidden spirit categories.
The enemy loves this strategy:
Get believers obsessed with invisible enemies.
Get them studying darkness.
Get them afraid.
Get them scanning every room.
Because fear itself becomes the distraction.
Greater Is He Who Is In You
Scripture says:
“Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” — 1 John 4:4
That verse is bigger than we sometimes let it be.
Greater.
Not equal.
Not mostly greater.
Greater.
You do not have Christ living inside you while some named spirit is overpowering Him.
You are:
sealed
indwelt
united with Christ
a temple of the Holy Spirit
That does not make the enemy imaginary. It makes him defeated.
Stop Looking for Jezebel and Start Looking at Jesus
I think one of the healthiest questions we can ask is:
Instead of: What spirit is behind this?
ask: What does truth say?
Instead of: Am I under attack?
ask: What is already true of me in Christ?
Instead of: Who is controlling?
ask: Am I responding from fear or faith?
Because sometimes what we call spiritual warfare is simply:
believing lies
forgetting identity
living intimidated
And Christ already addressed all of that.
Final Thought
The church was never meant to become a community of spiritual detectives.
We were never called to live afraid of hidden names and invisible rankings. The finished work of Jesus means:
You do not wake up vulnerable.
You wake up in Christ.
And Christ did not defeat sin, death, and the powers of darkness—only to leave you terrified of a label.
Lift your eyes.
You are not under some spirit.
You are in Christ.
And that changes everything.
