Holiness: Part 4: Holy Oil and Anointing

3–4 minutes

God gave Moses a specific recipe for holy anointing oil. This oil was not just fragrant—it was sacred. When it was poured out, it set the person or object apart as holy.

The Lord said to Moses, “Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, 250, and 250 of aromatic cane, and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil… You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests…”
(Exodus 30:22–30)

This oil was no ordinary mixture.

You had to be ritually clean—set apart—to even touch the holy things, including this oil. Since people weren’t inherently holy, the priests had to go through intense purification rituals before the anointing oil could be used on them.

The Anointing of a Son

But this anointing of the oil was a shadow—a prophetic symbol pointing to something (or rather, Someone) far greater.

That “Someone” is the Holy Spirit. We are anointed with the Holy Spirit, and why did God anoint us? Because we are sons, and God had promised it through Abraham.

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (Gal 4:6)

This means that every person who is a believer has the anointing. The Holy Spirit Himself is poured out on every believer, not as a shadow, but as the fulfillment of all that the oil represented. And that anointing makes us holy, because He is holy.

The anointing we have is the same anointing which Jesus received, of a Son. And here’s the beautiful part: under the Old Covenant, the oil could be defiled if it touched something unclean. But under grace, the Holy Spirit isn’t defiled by touching us—we are cleansed by receiving Him.

The Type of Anointing we have

We have the same anointing which Jesus received. Jesus is the Anointed One. The One whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit.

God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power…”
(Acts 10:38)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me…”
(Luke 4:18, quoting Isaiah 61)

Jesus walked in the fullness of the Spirit—the true anointing- the anointing of a Son. We have the same anointing, because we are sons. A lot of people still yearn for a double portion and all sorts of anointing, but there is no anointing greater than the anointing of a son.

The anointing you received from Him abides in you.”
(1 John 2:27)

You don’t become more anointed by acting more spiritual. You are anointed because the Holy Spirit lives in you, and He is the anointing.

Resting in the Anointing of a Son

So often, we strive for more—more anointing, more power, more favor—as if we are outsiders. But the truth is breathtaking: you are already in. You are already anointed. You are already holy—not because of what you’ve done, but because of the anointing, and you were anointed because you are a Son.

This anointing isn’t temporary. It doesn’t fade. It doesn’t fluctuate with your performance. It abides because it is there because you are a Son, and your sonship doesn’t fluctuate. He has called you holy, He has set you apart, and He has anointed you—because you are His child.

There is no greater anointing than the anointing of a Son.
There is no higher calling than to cry, “Abba, Father.”
And there is no deeper holiness than to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit Himself.

So stop striving. Stop searching for what you already have.
You are anointed.
You are set apart.
You are holy.

Because He lives in you.

Let the oil flow—not from effort, but from identity.

You are because He is.
