A Better Priesthood, A Better Covenant — Heb 7:17–28

3–5 minutes

Heb 7:17-28 reads

For it is attested of Him, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. And inasmuch as it was not without an oath (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, “The Lord has sworn And will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest forever’ ”); so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

1. The Context: Why Talk About Melchizedek?

Before verse 17, the author introduces a mysterious figure:

Melchizedek

  • No recorded beginning
  • No recorded end
  • King and priest

This is intentional.

Because the author is showing:

There exists a priesthood outside the Levitical system

The Key Argument

Abraham—the father of Israel—tithes to Melchizedek

Which means:

  • Melchizedek is greater than Abraham
  • And therefore greater than Levi (who came from Abraham)

So:

A greater priesthood already existed before the law

2. The Foundational Declaration (Hebrews 7:17)

“You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

This is quoted from Psalm 110:4

Notice one word: Forever

Why This Matters

The Levitical priesthood was:

  • Temporary
  • Generational
  • Replaced repeatedly

But this new priesthood is:

  • Eternal
  • Unchanging
  • Not based on lineage

This verse becomes the foundation for everything that follows.

3. The Old System Is Set Aside

“There is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness…”

This is one of the strongest statements in the New Testament.

What Is Being Set Aside?

The law system tied to the Levitical priesthood. And why?

“The Law made nothing perfect”

Important Clarification

This does NOT mean:

  • The law was bad
  • The law failed morally

It means:

The law was incapable of bringing perfection

It could:

  • Reveal sin
  • Regulate behavior

But it could NOT:

  • Transform the heart
  • Give access to God

4. The Turning Point: A Better Hope

“There is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.”

Now the focus shifts.

Not rules.

Not rituals.

The new covenant guarantees access to God.

What Is This “Better Hope”?

It is not:

  • A better version of the law
  • A stricter system

It is: A Person, Jesus Himself.

The Difference

Old system:

  • Distance
  • Mediation
  • Repetition

New reality:

  • Nearness
  • Relationship
  • Completion

5. The Oath: What Makes This Permanent

“The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind…”

This is crucial.

Levitical Priests:

  • Appointed without an oath
  • Based on lineage

Jesus:

  • Appointed by God’s oath

Why This Matters

An oath means:

  • Finality
  • Irreversibility
  • Divine certainty

God has established Jesus’s priesthood as eternal.

6. From Priesthood to Covenant

“Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.”

Now the argument progresses: Priesthood → Covenant

Why?

Because:

The priest defines the covenant

Change the priesthood →You change the covenant, and Jesus is the guarantee of the new Covenant.

7. Temporary vs Eternal Priesthood

The Contrast:

Levitical Priests:

  • Many in number
  • Constantly replaced
  • Limited by death

Jesus:

  • Lives forever
  • Holds priesthood permanently

The Result

“He is able to save to the uttermost…”

Why? Because He never stops interceding

This Is Powerful

Your salvation is not:

  • Dependent on you maintaining it
  • Dependent on repeated sacrifices

It is sustained by: A living, eternal High Priest

8. The Perfect High Priest

The author now describes Jesus:

“Holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners…”

Another Contrast

Old Priests:

  • Sinful
  • Needed to offer sacrifices for themselves
  • Repeated offerings daily

Jesus:

  • Sinless
  • Offered Himself once
  • No repetition needed

The Final Blow

“The law appoints men with weakness…but the oath appoints the Son, perfected forever”

9. The Big Picture: What Hebrews 7 Is Really Saying

This chapter is not just about priesthood. It is about: The end of an entire system.

10. Connection to the Larger Gospel Theme

This fits directly with the central message:

Jesus did not come to give better rules. He came to end the old system entirely

Hebrews 7 Declares:

  • The old system had limits
  • A greater priesthood always existed
  • God planned this from the beginning
  • That plan is fulfilled in Christ

Final Conclusion: The End of Striving, The Beginning of Access

The message of Hebrews 7 is simple—but radical:

You do not come to God through a system anymore. You come to God through a Person

And that Person:

  • Lives forever
  • Intercedes forever
  • Saves completely
