There’s a popular idea floating around that says, “When you honor a man of God, you access what they carry.” On the surface, it sounds spiritual—even practical. But let’s dig a little deeper:
Is that actually biblical?
Let’s explore what the Bible really says about honor, wisdom, and what we receive from others.
First: What Does It Mean to “Receive” Something?
Jesus said:
“He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward…”
— Matthew 10:41
Now, some use this to argue that unless you “honor” a prophet, you can’t receive what they carry. But here’s the key:
To “receive” a prophet simply means to welcome, listen to, and value the gift God has given them. It’s not about tapping into their “anointing” like some spiritual ATM. It’s about receptiveness. Unless you receive them, you won’t listen to what they have to offer.
However, a lot of people have made this into a something like tapping into an anointing.
The source of our transformation is always the Spirit of God working through the Word—not the status of another believer.
Can You Be Blocked from God’s Gifts Because You Dishonored a Person?
Let’s be clear: God alone is your source. Not a man. Not a ministry.
Yes, dishonor can harden your heart to truth. If you dishonor someone, you may stop listening to what they say—even if what they say is from God. That’s a you problem, not a them power.
But that doesn’t mean God shuts off your access to wisdom, calling, or “inheritance.” Why? Because your inheritance is in Christ, not in man.
“In Him also we have obtained an inheritance…”
— Ephesians 1:11
You can miss out on wisdom someone could have shared—but you are never disconnected from what Christ has made available to you through faith.
What About Honor?
Yes, the Bible teaches us to honor elders, leaders, and spiritual authorities:
- “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor…” (1 Timothy 5:17)
- “Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.” (1 Peter 2:17)
But honor is a fruit of love, not a formula for accessing power.
You don’t “unlock” someone’s anointing by honoring them. You simply position your own heart to learn and grow. And even then, God remains the source of wisdom, growth, and every spiritual blessing.
Final Thought
Yes—dishonor can make you tune out someone’s voice.
Yes—it can block you from receiving wisdom they offer.
But no—it does not block what “they carry.” They are not your source.
Jesus is.
So honor? Yes.
Worship man? Never.
Receive wisdom? Absolutely.
Depend on someone else’s “mantle”? Not biblical.
Your inheritance is in Christ, and no human dishonor can undo that.
