Why Go Back to Bondage?: Gal 4:8-10

3–4 minutes

In Galatians 4:8–10, Paul is frustrated—and with good reason. He challenges believers who’ve started slipping back into religious legalism:

“However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? You observe days and months and seasons and years. I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.” (Galatians 4:8–10)

Clearly, you can see that Paul considers performance based Christianity as weak, worthless and being enslaved to the elemental things. Let’s dive deeper.

The Danger of Performance-Based Religion

Here’s why Paul is so concerned: adding performance or legalism to your Christian walk isn’t just harmless religious practice—it’s slavery.

“It’s merely following the rules and following the 10 commandments“, you might ask, but once you start by performance, you start living by the flesh, and you are back to slavery over elemental things of this world.

Think about it. If someone says, “Don’t think about a red car,” what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? A red car! Legalism works the same way. If you rely on your ability to keep rules (like the Ten Commandments), it actually stirs up your flesh and makes you obsessed with the very thing you’re trying to avoid.

It’s better to be safe, right?

You might have the right motives, but when your mind is full of what you are trying to avoid- you end up thinking more of the sin, rather than who you are in Christ, and this is what Paul means when he says that “being enslaved by the elemental things of this world”. Eventually “He who fears being conquered is sure of defeat.” and you fall into the sin.

Paul describes this vividly in Romans 7, explaining how the Law, especially commands like “you shall not covet,” doesn’t stop covetousness—it actually sparks it. This cycle traps us in spiritual defeat and guilt. Instead of empowering us, legalism keeps us fixated on our failures and weaknesses, drawing us deeper into frustration and bondage. This is why you see legalistic denominations so focussed on themselves and what they need to do, rather than what Christ has done.

Identity Over Performance

What should we do then? Paul’s solution isn’t more rules. His message is radically different—not sin-consciousness, but Christ consciousness.

  • You have been crucified with Christ and are dead to the Law (Galatians 2:20), so why should the Law control you?
  • Your relationship with God started in faith and continues in faith—not by works or performance (Galatians 3:3).
  • Your growth is by faith, your maturity is by faith, and your daily walk is by faith—not by sight or self-effort.

Freedom in the Spirit

Instead of striving in your own strength, live from the Spirit. When you live from your identity in Christ, empowered by the Spirit, you naturally avoid gratifying the desires of the flesh. You no longer struggle to perform perfectly; you rest in His finished work.

So, let’s stop returning to the bondage of religious performance and legalism. Embrace the freedom Christ purchased for you and start living confidently in the power and identity of the Spirit!
