Community, love and experiential growth: Col 2:1-3

3–5 minutes

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Paul’s Concern for Believers He Hadn’t Met

Paul’s letter to the Colossians reveals his deep concern for churches he had never visited, such as the church in Laodicea. This church, located just a few miles northwest of Colosse, was likely founded by converts during Paul’s time in Ephesus. However, Paul’s concern wasn’t limited to the churches he directly planted. He was deeply troubled by the presence of false teachings that could lead believers astray.

Paul’s response is both remarkable and instructive. He agonized in prayer for these believers, striving to ensure their steadfastness in the truth. Unlike many today who focus solely on their immediate ministries or congregations, Paul demonstrated a broader concern for the universal body of Christ. This attitude encourages believers to expand their perspective and embrace a global vision for Christ’s Church.

Strengthening the Heart Through Love and Unity

Paul emphasizes that the strengthening of hearts, described as parakaleō in the Greek, is intricately tied to being “knit together in love” (Colossians 2:2). This unity is not mere sentimentality; it leads to full assurance of understanding and deeper knowledge of Christ.

Paul outlines a clear pathway to spiritual growth:

  • Step 1: Be in a community and knit hearts together in love, which results in hearts encouraged.
  • Step 2: The community and encouragement results in full assurance of understanding.
  • Result: Access to the advanced and perfect experiential knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ—in whom are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Spiritual growth is most effective within a community. Living the Christian life in isolation is not God’s design. Instead, relationships challenge and stretch our faith, teaching us to apply biblical principles in real-world contexts.

The Role of Community in Spiritual Growth

Paul’s emphasis on love and unity highlights the transformative role of community. Growth occurs as believers engage with others, facing challenges together. Faith matures as scriptural truths are applied and proven true in life’s trials.

Peter echoes this principle in 2 Peter 1:5-8, urging believers to add virtues like moral excellence, self-control, and brotherly kindness to their faith. These qualities, cultivated through relationships, prevent spiritual stagnation. The testing ground for these virtues lies in community life, where offenses, trials, and opportunities to serve test and refine us.

Without applying these truths in community, knowledge remains intellectual and fails to bear fruit. True growth happens when believers engage, apply, and live out the mystery of Christ within them.

Summary

Peter echoes this principle in 2 Peter 1:5-8, where he exhorts believers to diligently add moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to their faith. He promises that these qualities, when increasing, render believers fruitful in the knowledge of Christ. The testing ground for these virtues is found in relationships and community life. Only through engagement with others can we truly evaluate and cultivate brotherly kindness, love, and self-control. Without this application, understanding remains mere head knowledge, limiting spiritual growth.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your Word that reminds us of the deep concern Paul had for the body of Christ. Help us to share that same love and burden for one another, reaching beyond our immediate circles to pray and care for believers everywhere. Teach us to value the unity that comes from being knit together in love, and let our relationships be a source of encouragement and strength.

Lord, we ask for hearts that are humble and open to the full assurance of understanding found in Christ. May we never settle for mere knowledge but grow into the experiential understanding of Your mystery, Christ in us—the hope of glory. Reveal to us the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden in Him, so that we may walk confidently in truth and stand firm against any false teachings or deceptions.

Father, we pray for our communities of faith. Strengthen our bonds in love, and help us to see challenges as opportunities to grow in grace and trust. Teach us to apply Your Word in the context of relationships, learning to practice brotherly kindness, self-control, and perseverance. May we be a reflection of Christ’s love, building each other up and drawing closer to You.

Finally, Lord, fill us with gratitude for the riches we have in Christ. May we live boldly, knowing that in Him we lack nothing and are equipped with everything we need for life and godliness. Thank You for Your faithfulness in making us complete.

In Jesus’ name, we pray,

Amen.
