Daily Devotions: Community, love and experiential growth: Col 2:1-3

3–4 minutes

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Observations and Reflections

Paul’s Concern for believers he hadn’t met

The church in Laodicea was situated just a few miles northwest of Colosse. Similar to the church in Colosse, it is likely that this church was founded by converts of Paul during his time in Ephesus. However, Paul was deeply concerned about the presence of false teachings that could lead these churches astray. His response is remarkable—agonizing in prayer for these believers, ensuring that they remain steadfast in the truth. Unlike many of us today, who often focus solely on our immediate ministries or churches, Paul exemplified a broader concern for the body of Christ as a whole.

2. Strengthening the Heart Through Love and Unity

The strengthening (parakaleō) of the heart that Paul speaks of is intimately connected to being “knit together in love” and results in full assurance of understanding and knowledge of Christ (Col. 2:2). Sometimes, we can brush it all away thinking that it’s all very cliche. However, Paul is saying that it is not just community for the sake of community, but it will help you grow in experiential understanding.

The pathway to these spiritual treasures is clear:

  • Step 1: Be in a community and knit hearts together in love, which results in hearts encouraged.
  • Step 2: The community and encouragement results in full assurance of understanding.
  • Result: Access to the advanced and perfect experiential knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ—in whom are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

The Role of Community in Spiritual Growth

As believers are united in love within a community, they attain the full assurance of understanding. This underscores the importance of being part of a body of believers—you cannot live the Christian life in isolation. Being part of a community means engaging with others, facing challenges together, and growing in faith through real-world experiences.

Spiritual growth often happens when faith is tested in the context of relationships. It’s one thing to learn about biblical principles in a comfortable environment, but it is quite another to apply them when confronted with offenses, challenges, sickness, demonic oppression. As believers apply scriptural truths and see them fulfilled, their understanding matures into full assurance, resulting in further advanced and perfect experiential knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ in us. This journey leads to uncovering even deeper treasures of wisdom and knowledge found in Him.

Experiential Knowledge Requires Engagement and Application

Peter echoes this principle in 2 Peter 1:5-8, where he exhorts believers to diligently add moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to their faith. He promises that these qualities, when increasing, render believers fruitful in the knowledge of Christ. The testing ground for these virtues is found in relationships and community life. Only through engagement with others can we truly evaluate and cultivate brotherly kindness, love, and self-control. Without this application, understanding remains mere head knowledge, limiting spiritual growth.

Summary

The knowledge Paul speaks of is not just intellectual but experiential—a deep, advanced understanding of the mystery that Christ lives in us. This experiential knowledge transforms lives and reveals the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge found in Christ. It is through love, unity, and application in community that believers grow into this true and fruitful knowledge of God’s mystery.
