Applying Military Principles to Spiritual Warfare

3–5 minutes

Napoleon Bonaparte famously said, “No war is ever won on the defensive.” This statement, while rooted in military strategy, holds profound implications for our spiritual lives. As believers, we are engaged in a constant spiritual battle, and understanding the principles of warfare can help us navigate and win this battle. The Bible is rich with military terminology and concepts, both in the Old and New Testaments, that can guide us in this fight.

Principles

  1. Principle of Intelligence: Knowing Your Enemy, Your Troops, and Your Mission
  2. Principle of Simplicity in Command
  3. Principle of Overwhelming Force: Hard and Fast
  4. Principle of Faith and Authority: Just Do It
  5. Fight!!

Principle of Intelligence: Knowing Your Enemy, Your Troops, and Your Mission

One of the first principles in any warfare is intelligence—having access to critical information about both your forces and your enemy. This is true in spiritual warfare as well. To effectively fight, we must understand not only the tactics of the enemy but also the commands given by our Commander, the Holy Spirit.

Principle of Simplicity in Command

The more people you command, the simpler your commands must be. This was exemplified by Jesus during His time on earth. His teachings were straightforward and actionable. We, however, often complicate these commands with elaborate theology. Jesus never sought to validate His words; He simply expected obedience.

A key to faith is applying general commands to specific situations. We don’t need to know every theological nuance to act in faith; we just need to understand the basic principles of how the enemy operates and how to stand against him.

Principle of Overwhelming Force: Hard and Fast

The principle of overwhelming force is about hitting the enemy hard and fast, overwhelming them before they can mount an effective defense. This is exactly what the devil tries to do, but it’s also a strategy we can employ in spiritual warfare.

To apply kingdom dominion on earth, we must first understand God’s original intent for humanity. In Genesis, God’s intention was clear: He created man in His image and gave him dominion over the earth. Every doctrine and action should align with this original intent.

Jesus’ mission was to restore this original order. He demonstrated dominion by healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, and casting out darkness. His actions showed God’s will on earth, and He taught us to pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).

In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus laid out His mission: to preach the gospel, heal the brokenhearted, and set the captives free. Acts 10:38 summarizes His ministry: “He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil.” This is the model we are to follow—taking action to bring about God’s will on earth.

Many in the body of Christ are waiting for a “visitation” from God, not realizing that they are already the habitation of God. The Spirit of God dwells within us, and as the body of Christ, we carry His presence wherever we go.

Principle of Faith and Authority: Just Do It

Faith and authority are central to living out God’s dominion on earth. Jesus never taught us to understand sickness; He taught us to exercise faith and authority over it.

In Matthew 8:10, Jesus marveled at the faith of the centurion who recognized that sickness was under Jesus’ authority. The centurion understood that just as soldiers obey commands, sickness and disease must obey the authority of Jesus. This recognition of authority is what Jesus called “great faith.”

The church often tries to understand healing when what we should be doing is exercising the authority given to us by Christ. Healing and deliverance are manifestations of the dominion God gave humanity, and they glorify God.

Fight!!

Spiritual warfare requires us to be proactive, not reactive. We must understand our enemy, our mission, and the authority we have been given. By following Jesus’ example—exercising dominion, walking in faith, and applying God’s Word—we can effectively engage in the spiritual battle.

Remember, no war is ever won on the defensive. We are called to take the fight to the enemy, overwhelming him with the power and authority we have in Christ. Our job is not to wait passively for God to move but to actively live out His commands, bringing His will to earth as it is in heaven.
