What’s Behind All Sickness?

3–5 minutes

Illness is a complex phenomenon, and people get sick for various reasons. While medical science provides insights into the physical causes of diseases, the spiritual and natural dimensions also play a significant role. In this blog post, we will explore five main reasons why people fall ill, drawing from biblical teachings and scientific insights.

Key points discussed

The Consequences of Sin

One of the spiritual reasons for sickness is the consequence of sin. In John 5:14, Jesus warns that sin can lead to sickness. Romans 6:16 states:

Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

Rom 6:16

Sin results in death, or the effects of death, which is sickness. This connection between sin and sickness is evident but not always direct, meaning not every sickness is a result of personal sin.

Natural reasons

We’re living in a fallen world. It all started with Adam and Eve choosing to sin in the garden of Eden, and now we’re seeing the consequences all around us. Ever since that, everything has gone downhill, with death and sickness running rampant. Jesus even warned us about it, saying “In this world you will have trouble…” (John 16:33) (But the good news is, he also said that he’s already won the victory, and we can claim it as our own).

Romans 6:23 reminds us that “the wages of sin is death,” so basically, death and sickness are part of this world because of the original sin. Not all illnesses have a spiritual or demonic cause; sometimes they just happen because of natural stuff like accidents, genetics, or the environment. It’s all part of the messed up natural order of this fallen world, and it can affect anyone, no matter their spiritual state.

But, as believers, we are called to demonstrate the perfect will of God in our lives, which includes health and healing. By living out God’s will, we show the world what it means to be in alignment with His purposes.

The Devil’s Oppression

In some cases, sickness can be directly caused by the devil’s oppression. The devil can either be the cause of the sickness itself or create circumstances that lead to illness. When the devil is the root of the sickness, rebuking it in the name of Jesus can cause the sickness to leave.

However, when the devil has caused destruction in a person’s life, rebuking the sickness may be just the first step. The person might need to be restored, much like a house that needs repair after a destructive tenant leaves. This restoration is often achieved through the life-giving power of a believer who can minister healing through the Word of God. Additionally, negative thoughts planted by years of oppression must be addressed with continued ministry and the truth of God’s Word, though healing should never be withheld.

The Principle of Sowing and Reaping

The principle of sowing and reaping is another significant factor in why people get sick. Dr. Caroline Leaf, a cognitive neuroscientist, has pointed out that 75-98% of diseases are linked to our thought processes. Thoughts are not just intangible; they have a chemical and physical presence in our brains.

Stress and worry, which often focus on the future, are significant contributors to illness. Dr. Leaf’s research suggests that if we replace stress with faith, a large percentage of diseases could be prevented or healed. This aligns with the biblical principle of sowing and reaping—what we sow in our minds can manifest in our physical health.

One solutions fits all

Sickness can arise from a variety of sources—spiritual, natural, and psychological. Understanding these causes helps us approach health and healing holistically, addressing both the physical symptoms and the underlying spiritual and mental factors. However, the solution for all of this is the same. If you are a believer,

  • Know that healing is something that has already been made available for you (Isa 53:5).
  • Know that God wants you healed.
  • Know that the power of God can drive out any power of darkness, and restore you completely.
  • Know that you have eternal life in you that dispels darkness, power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and the authority of Jesus.
  • Now speak the healing into your life.
