God doesn’t give you sickness: Gal 3:13

2–3 minutes

Scripture Focus:

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.’” – Galatians 3:13 (NIV)

Reflection:

One of the most harmful misconceptions in Christian circles is the idea that God sends sickness to teach us lessons or develop our character. This belief not only distorts God’s loving nature but also contradicts the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Under the Old Covenant, sickness and disease were seen as curses that resulted from breaking God’s law (Deuteronomy 28:15–28). These consequences highlighted the impossibility of living a sinless life under the law. However, the story didn’t end there. Jesus came to fulfill the law and redeem us from its curse. Through His sacrifice, we no longer live under the weight of the law but under the grace of the New Covenant.

Jesus made it clear in His ministry that sickness was not from God but something He came to destroy. Over and over, He healed the sick, showing compassion and power, never once refusing to help or suggesting that sickness was God’s teaching tool.

Religion may suggest that God uses sickness to teach us, but Scripture teaches otherwise. God instructs us and molds our character through His Word and the Holy Spirit, not through pain and suffering. Jesus bore our sicknesses and carried our pains (Isaiah 53:4–5) so we could walk in health and freedom. His desire is for us to live abundant lives, free from the curses of the law and the lies of condemnation.

Takeaway Points:

1. Sickness Is Not From God: God does not send sickness. Jesus consistently healed the sick, demonstrating God’s heart for healing and wholeness.

2. Redemption From the Curse: Under the New Covenant, Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, including sickness and disease.

3. God Teaches Through His Word: God instructs us through the truth of Scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, not through suffering or pain.

4. Live in Freedom: Embrace the health and abundant life that Jesus paid for on the cross. Reject the lie that sickness is God’s tool for teaching.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for redeeming us from the curse of the law through Jesus Christ. Thank You for revealing Your will to heal and for showing us through Your Word that sickness is not from You. Help us to reject false teachings that distort Your character and to stand firm in the truth of Your Word. Holy Spirit, teach us, guide us, and mold us into the likeness of Christ as we walk in the freedom and abundance You have provided. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
