Is the current chaos of the EU in line with the Bible?

Brexit happened and it has created a lot of chaos and mayhem in Europe. Over the past few weeks I have come across news about the growing tensions among the EU nations and also the possibility of more referendums and exits.

Does the Bible have anything to say about the European Union. Is it mentioned in the Bible.?

Yes.

We can have a closer look into the end time prophesies in the Bible and see how all these connect together. One funny thing about prophesies is that even though we know what happens eventually, we can merely speculate about the path towards the eventuality. I may not be entirely correct. But I can surely provide references or supporting arguments which you can also check yourself.

European Union and its History

European Union was formed in 1993. It was the consummation of the efforts to unite Europe after the wake of two world wars initiated in Europe. But the idea didn’t pop up in 1945. It has been the dream of many leaders to unite Europe by whatsoever means. In 1453, the idea of peacefully uniting Europe against a common enemy emerged after the Fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. Many leaders tried after that and now we have the European Union.

 

The last time a successful integration happened was during the time of the Roman Empire which started in 27 BC and continued till 1453 after several divisions. The majority of the nations that were part of the Roman Empire were the nations of Europe and the governance was from Rome. The contributions of the Roman Empire to contemporary culture and world as we know it is massive. Roman Empire was powerful beyond doubt and the European Union is the remnant of the Roman Empire or the idea of it.

 

The Empires and the Bible

Reference : Daniel 2:31-45

The passage talks about the dream King Nebuchadnezzar saw in 604 BC and the interpretation of it. The dream was about the rise of major Kingdoms after his Kingdom. King Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian empire was symbolised using the head of gold( v.38). Daniel interprets further and predicts the rise of three more kingdoms, symbolised by silver, bronze and iron. He prophesies that the Babylonian Empire shall fall and the Kingdom will be given to the Medes and Persians. This was during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar.

Silver : As prophesied by Daniel(Daniel 5:28), the Medes and Persians came into power during the lifetime of Daniel itself(Daniel 9:1). This was the empire symbolised by silver. But later in Daniel 10, an angel tells Daniel regarding the future and makes it clear that another kingdom will rise from the Mediterranean region called the Grecian Empire(v.1-4).

Bronze :Daniel didn’t live long enough to witness the next world empire coming into existence. But history tells us that the Greek Empire or the Hellenistic Empire led by Alexander the Great was a great empire, just like the angel had told Daniel(Daniel 9:1-4). History transpired exactly as it was prophesied and the Grecian Empire gave way to the fourth Empire.

Iron : During the time of Jesus, another powerful empire had established itself. The Roman Empire. It came into power in 27 BC and it was so mighty with Rome as the governance headquarters. The New Testament talks a lot about this empire which was symbolised by Iron in the dream of Nebuchadnezzar. History is a witness to all these fulfilled prophesies. There is more.

Next comes a strange empire towards the end times. An empire symbolised by iron and clay. Roman Empire was symbolised by iron but in the dream of Daniel, it is  mentioned that the feet was partly of clay and partly of iron, which wouldn’t mix much. Iron represented the Roman empire and the unlikely and weak mixture of Iron and clay would mean the rise of a revived weak Roman Empire.

Points about this Revived Roman Empire.

1. The existence of iron in the symbolic mixture strongly suggests the existence of Roman Empire in this kingdom.
2. The Kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle which explains why we have wealthy countries like Germany and France and some other extremely poor nations in the EU(Daniel 2:42)
3. The people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay. The Brexit has opened the wounds of the past and has shown that unity among people is still something that is to be desired.(Daniel 2:43)
4. In another symbolism of this empire, in Daniel 7:24 talks about 10 rulers or leaders who will come from this empire. There will be 10 major nations of the EU. It could mean that the current list of 28 nations of the EU would shrink to 10 or it could mean that it will be more of a refined or revived European Union where 10 countries would play a significant role. Whatever happens, I feel there will be more referendums and exits in the future to a much slimmer EU.
5. After that another leader will come, from another nation. He will subdue three leaders and he is the antichrist.
6. Some scholars do believe that the 10 toes of the feet of the statue represents the 10 rulers mentioned before. The fact that 5 of them are one side and another 5 on the other side would imply that there will be two major coalitions within the 10 nations.

What the antichrist will do after that is a discussion for another day. But have a closer look into the points above. There is only one union of countries in the form that is mentioned above and that is the European Union. The European Union is evolving and forming into the kingdom governed by ten nations as prophesied thousands of years ago by Daniel. My take would be that the brexit would not be the last referendum nor will Britain be the only country to exit. Many countries will be follow the course.

Well, as believers in Christ what does this mean to us?. Its a timely reminder  that the second coming is much near and to those who think all these are just a coincidence, I wish you would open your eyes to see it isn’t coincidence. It is all happening. None of the things  happening in this world is by coincidence. It was all prophesied before.
