Prophetic gift is one of the most amazing and yet most misused gifts in the church. The Bible says that the prophetic ministry is to.
- Edify the church
- Encourage believers
- Comfort
However, much of the prophecy these days is about condemnation, guilt, fear and it is a “profit”ic ministry rather than a prophetic ministry!
However, understand the devil’s deception in this, and don’t despise the prophetic. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 14:5, “I wish you all would prophesy, so that the church may be built up.” The Great Commission is not just about preaching; it’s about using every gift—including prophecy—to strengthen and empower believers.
Prophecy is for Every Believer
Many think that prophecy is reserved for a select few—pastors, prophets, or special individuals. They think that only those called to prophecy should do so. But the Bible tells us otherwise:
“You may all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and be encouraged.” (1 Corinthians 14:31)
This means that every believer—including you—can prophesy!
“In the last days, I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy…” (Acts 2:17)
This is not a selective gift; it is a promise for all who walk in Christ.
Prophecy Builds Up and Encourages
One of the most important aspects of prophecy is edification. When used correctly, it strengthens and uplifts believers, helping them stay firm in their faith. However, many times the prophetic has been used as a tool to manipulate. I have heard of Pastors that have used the prophetic to tear down their critics, and also to curse those who didn’t donate to the church funding. However, the Bible is clear that prophecy should build up and encourage.
“The one who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement, and comfort.” (1 Corinthians 14:3)
Prophecy isn’t meant to make people feel bad or boss them around—it’s all about bringing some joy and encouragement.
Ministered healing through a prophetic word
I’ll never forget when I was in Germany, staying out on top of Königstuhl hill, totally struggling with my ear balance, and let me tell you, it hurt sometimes. One day, I popped into Hope Church in Heidelberg for their Thursday service, and nobody there knew me. Out of the blue, this guy behind me tapped my shoulder and asked if I had ear problems. He told me that God wanted to heal my ear and that everything would be okay. It was a real prophetic moment! Such prophetic words can restore your faith, bring clarity, and remind you that God is with you.
Prophecy Must Always Point to Christ
“Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith.” (Hebrews 12:2)
The focus of prophecy must always be Jesus. It’s not about elevating a prophet, predicting the future for personal gain, or manipulating people. True prophecy reveals the heart of God and directs people toward Him. I’ve heard prophets go on and on about the greatness of the anointing they have received by a special laying on of hands and they are very always pointing back to them. I used to listen to a certain Pastor in Africa, who has a huge church. He is so good at prophetic word, and he is so so on point, but the end of it all, he says “My name is XXX XX (His name)”, in the sense that “don’t mess with me”. He was always pointing people to himself and it should not be so.
How to Step into Prophetic Ministry
Before prophesying, it’s essential to:
- Fix your eyes on Jesus
- Seek wisdom in timing and delivery
- Ensure that the word aligns with Scripture
If a prophetic word does not reflect the nature of Christ—His love, truth, and righteousness—it should be questioned. God is not got to say anything contrary to what he has already said in His Word.
Many believers hesitate to prophesy because of fear—fear of getting it wrong, fear of looking foolish, or fear of being judged. But remember:
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Like learning to ride a bike, you won’t get it perfect at first. But stepping out in faith is key.
Here are practical steps to start growing in prophecy:
1. Desire the Gift
“Eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy.” (1 Corinthians 14:1)
Paul commands us to desire prophecy, meaning we should actively seek it, just like we seek wisdom, healing, or faith.
2. Speak in Faith
Many hesitate because they overthink prophecy. But prophecy often comes as a small prompting—a word, an image, or a scripture. Speak what you sense in faith, and let God do the rest.
“Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.” (Psalm 81:10)
Just like when you speak in tongues first, you will have to speak what you feel like, and afterwards you become more fluent at it, similarly, you need to speak out in faith first.
3. Prophesy in Love
“Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14)
True prophecy does not embarrass or shame people. It is given with compassion, wisdom, and grace.
I’ve got a story about a prophet who popped into a church where my friend went. This guy straight-up told my friend she had an arrogant heart and wasn’t submissive to her husband. I knew her pretty well, and honestly, that prophecy was totally off and felt really shady. Even her husband was taken aback. It just goes to show how people can misuse prophecy.
4. Stay Humble and Give God the Glory
Prophecy is not about elevating yourself. It is a gift from God to build others up. If people start looking to you instead of Jesus, something is wrong.
“He must increase, and I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
If someone says, “Wow, how did you know that?” Your response should always be:“Because Jesus knows you, and He loves you.”
Final Thoughts: You Are Called to Prophesy!
The prophetic gift is not reserved for a few; it is available to every believer. If you are in Christ, you have access to the same Holy Spirit who empowered the prophets, apostles, and Jesus Himself.
The world needs believers who can hear God’s voice and speak life. The church needs prophets who will encourage, strengthen, and restore morale.
