I want to talk about something important — something that concerns every believer who speaks or serves in public:
When we go out to share our faith, whether through preaching, debate, or online videos — is it done out of love?
Because the truth is, it’s possible to be right about theology and still be wrong in tone.
It’s possible to defend truth and yet misrepresent the heart of Christ.
It’s possible to preach powerfully and still sound, as Paul says, like a clanging cymbal.
1️⃣ What Paul Says About Love
Let’s read 1 Corinthians 13 together — not as a wedding verse, but as a mirror for our ministry.
Paul writes:
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love,
I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,
but do not have love, I gain nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:1–3)
That’s sobering.
Paul is saying: you can do all the right things — even in Jesus’ name — and still gain nothing if love isn’t the motive.
2️⃣ Let’s Apply This to Public Ministry
Now let’s paraphrase Paul’s words for our modern day — because this is where we need them most.
Street preaching is patient. Street preaching is kind.
Street preaching does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
Street preaching does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered.
Street preaching keeps no record of wrongs.
Street preaching does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
Street preaching always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Or what if we applied it to public debates of faith — those discussions and confrontations that are livestreamed or shared online?
Public debate is patient. Public debate is kind.
It doesn’t boast. It doesn’t humiliate others.
It doesn’t speak to win arguments, but to win hearts.
It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
It rejoices in the truth but never in someone else’s defeat.
It always seeks the good of the other person.
When was the last time we measured our ministries, sermons, or “bold stands” by this standard — love?
3️⃣ The Heart Behind the Message
When we stand in public — whether preaching on the street, debating on social media, or teaching in church — the question isn’t “Am I bold enough?” but “Am I loving enough?”
Because boldness without love becomes aggression.
Truth without love becomes arrogance.
And zeal without compassion becomes noise.
Paul reminds us that even prophecy, knowledge, and faith are meaningless apart from love.
God isn’t impressed by how loudly we speak truth — He’s concerned with how much of Christ is seen when we do.
4️⃣ Why Love Changes Everything
When ministry flows from love:
- We stop seeing people as opponents to defeat and start seeing them as souls to reach.
- We stop speaking to be right and start speaking to reconcile.
- We stop performing and start serving.
Love changes the tone, the motive, and the outcome.
It turns arguments into invitations.
It turns preaching into healing.
It turns public ministry into a reflection of Christ Himself.
5️⃣ The Way of Love
Jesus didn’t win people through clever arguments or staged confrontations.
He won them through compassion.
He wept over Jerusalem.
He ate with tax collectors and sinners.
He touched the untouchable and restored the shamed.
That is the same love we are called to express when we stand before the world.
So before we post that debate, record that video, or join that discussion — let’s ask:
“Is this being done in love?”
“Would Jesus speak this way to this person?”
Because without love, ministry may get applause from men, but it gains nothing before God.
Final Reflection
The world doesn’t need louder Christians — it needs loving ones.
The Gospel doesn’t need defenders with sharper words — it needs witnesses with softer hearts.
If our preaching, debating, and evangelism don’t sound like Jesus,
then no matter how right we are, we’ll sound like noise.
“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples — if you love one another.” (John 13:35)
So preach, debate, share —
but let it all flow from love,
because without love, we have nothing.
