“For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”— Philippians 2:13
Ever had one of those moments where you just felt like doing something kind? Maybe helping someone, praying for a friend, or just stepping away from temptation instead of diving in?
You know what that was?
God working in you.
According to Philippians 2:13, it’s not just your actions that God empowers—it’s your desires too.
He gives you the will to do good and the strength to carry it out.
God Gives the Desire, and the Power
Think about how wild this is:
God doesn’t just sit back and watch your life like a coach yelling from the sidelines.
He’s on the field—inside you—whispering, nudging, stirring.
When you feel a pull to forgive, to serve, to worship, to give, to speak up, or to remain silent at the right time—that’s not just “you being good.” That’s God’s Spirit working in you.
You didn’t manufacture that goodness. You received it.
And that’s important—because some of us grew up thinking we had to white-knuckle our way through obedience, trusting rules more than the Spirit.
But the truth?
We’re not law-driven anymore. We’re Spirit-led.
The New Creation Comes With a New Operating System
The moment you were born again, you got a total spiritual upgrade.
Your old operating system (that kept crashing with sin) was replaced. You got new software—a new heart and a new spirit.
Now you want what God wants.
Even if your mind sometimes needs renewal (Romans 12:2), your spirit is already aligned with God’s desires.
That’s why a born-again believer can never truthfully say,
“I never want to do good.”
Even when we fall short, there’s a tension—a tug in our spirit—that says, “This isn’t who I am anymore.”
But Wait—If God Works in Me, Why Don’t I Always Obey?
Ah, here’s where it gets real.
Yes, God is working in you, giving you the will and the power…
But He won’t override your free will.
That’s why sometimes you feel that stirring to do something good… and still scroll past it. Or you know you should hold your tongue… but don’t.
It’s not because God wasn’t working. It’s because your flesh (old mindset) had a louder voice in that moment—and you listened.
The Partnership: God’s Sovereignty & Man’s Response
This has always been the dynamic.
Look at Ezra 1:1 — “The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia…”
God stirred his heart.
And then Ezra 1:3, Cyrus responds and makes a decree.
See that? Stirring… then responding.
God is sovereign. He initiates. He speaks.
But we are responsible—we respond.
Even King David got this:
“Give me understanding, that I may observe Your law… Make me walk in the path of Your commandments…”
— Psalm 119:34–35
David wasn’t asking God to forcefully control him.
He was saying: “God, guide me. Change my heart. Lead me from within.”
And guess what?
As a new creation in Christ, you are the answer to that prayer.
Final Thought: Let the Stirring Lead to Action
God is working in you.
To will and to do… for His good pleasure.
So here’s the encouragement:
Don’t ignore it. Don’t brush it off.
Lean into it.
Let that divine desire turn into divine action.
You’re not doing this alone.
You’re walking in step with the One who lives in you.
And that changes everything.
