“But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.” — Hebrews 8:6
Let’s first check the context. The author has been saying that:
- Jesus is our High Priest
- But not like the priests from the tribe of Levi
- He serves in the true heavenly tabernacle, not the earthly one
The key idea: The entire Old Testament system — priests, sacrifices, temple — was a shadow, not the real thing.
Not that it was false of useless, but incomplete — pointing forward to something greater.
Not Inferior — But Surpassed
Then the author says that Jesus has obtained a “more excellent ministry”. What does this mean?
Let’s be clear:
- The Old Covenant was powerful
- People were healed, protected, and blessed
- Even Jesus, during His earthly ministry, functioned under it
The covenant given through Abraham and carried through Israel was no small thing.
But the point is this:
The Old Covenant which was the shadow was powerful, then the New covenant was better in every scale, especially in the case of promises.
A More excellent ministry
All these chapters leading up to this, the author was saying that Jesus was greater, but now, the author is looking at it from a different angle.
From the ministry stand point.
Just from the fact that Jesus is a minister of a better covenant, He is a minister of a more excellent ministry! Wow!
How is it that it is a more excellent ministry?
1. A Better Place — Heaven, Not a Shadow
- Old priests → served in an earthly tabernacle
- Jesus → serves in heaven itself, in God’s presence
Hebrews 8:2 — He is a minister in the true tabernacle, not a copy
The old ministry operated in a symbolic system while Jesus’ ministry operates in ultimate reality
2. A Better Sacrifice — Once for All
- Old priests → offered animal sacrifices repeatedly
- Jesus → offered Himself once for all
Hebrews 9:12 — not by the blood of goats and calves, but His own blood
Old sacrifices → covered sin temporarily. Jesus’ sacrifice → actually removes sin once and for all.
3. A Better Priest — Eternal and Perfect
- Old priests → sinful, mortal, constantly replaced
- Jesus → sinless, eternal, unchanging
Hebrews 7:24–25
He holds His priesthood permanently… able to save completely
Meaning:
- Old priest → limited help
- Jesus → complete and finished work of salvation
4. A Better Covenant — “I Will,” Not “If You Will”
This is the heart of Hebrews 8:6.
- Old Covenant → based on human obedience (“if you obey…”)
- New Covenant → based on God’s promises (“I will…”) appropriated by faith.
The old system depended on your performance. The new system depends on God’s faithfulness
5. A Better Transformation — Inside, Not Outside
- Old system → external law (rules, rituals)
- Jesus → internal change (heart, mind)
“I will write My laws on their hearts”
Meaning:
- Old → behavior control
- New → nature transformation
6. A Finished Work — Not Ongoing Effort
- Old priests → never finished, always offering sacrifices
- Jesus → sat down (Hebrews 8:1)
Sitting down = work completed
Meaning:
- The old ministry was never enough
- Jesus’ ministry is fully sufficient
So Why Is His Ministry “More Excellent”?
Put it all together:
Jesus’ ministry is more excellent because:
- It happens in heaven, not a shadow
- It offers a perfect sacrifice, not repeated ones
- It is carried out by an eternal priest, not temporary ones
- It is based on God’s promise, not human effort
- It produces inner transformation, not external compliance
- It is finished, not ongoing
Built on Better Promises
This is where it becomes deeply personal.
The ministry of Jesus is not just better in structure —
it is grounded in better promises:
- “I will remember their sins no more”
- “I will be their God”
- “They shall all know Me”
- “I will write My laws on their hearts”
Notice the language:
Not “you must…”
But “I will…”
The Final Thought
The Old Covenant was great but it could never perfect us, nor was it meant to be. Jesus didn’t come to improve it.
He came to fulfill it and bring something far greater. A ministry that doesn’t just deal with sin temporarily But removes it and brings you into real, lasting relationship with God
