Few questions reveal the beauty of our salvation like this one:
Are we, as believers, greater than angels—because we are in Christ?
At first glance, the idea feels almost wrong. Angels appear in Scripture as radiant, powerful, terrifyingly glorious beings. They shut mouths of lions, guard nations, minister in fire, and stand before God.
So how could ordinary humans—weak, mortal, sinful—be greater than angels?
The Bible gives a stunning answer:
In ourselves, no.
But in Christ, yes.
Let’s walk through this carefully and biblically.
1. By Creation Order, Humans Are Lower Than Angels (For Now)
Psalm 8:4–5 says:
“You have made him a little lower than the angels…”
This reflects our present condition:
- mortal bodies
- limited strength
- earthly existence
- subject to suffering and death
In our natural state, angels are greater in power, glory, and heavenly status.
So right now:
✘ Humans (in Adam) are not greater than angels.
✔ Angels exceed us in strength and glory.
But that is only the first chapter of our story.
2. Christ Became Lower Than Angels — Then Rose Above All of Them
Hebrews 2 tells us:
- Jesus became lower than angels “for a little while”
- Jesus died
- Jesus rose
- Jesus was exalted above all beings, including angels
Why is this important?
Because Jesus did not become human just to represent Himself. He came as the second Adam, the head of a new humanity. His story becomes our story. What happened to Him will happen to us.
So when Jesus rose and ascended:
Humanity in Him was lifted above the angels.
3. Scripture Explicitly Teaches That We Are Exalted Above Angels in Christ
A. We are seated with Christ in heavenly places
Ephesians 2:6
“God… seated us with Him in the heavenly places.”
Where is Christ seated?
Above angels.
Far above all rule and authority (Eph. 1:20–21).
If He is there, and we are in Him,
then our position is above angels as well.
B. We will judge angels
1 Corinthians 6:3
“Do you not know that we will judge angels?”
You don’t judge those who outrank you.
You judge from a place of greater authority.
This alone settles the question.
C. Angels serve believers
Hebrews 1:14
“Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Angels serve.
Believers inherit.
Servants do not outrank sons and daughters.
D. We are co-heirs with Christ
Romans 8:17
Christ inherits everything.
We inherit with Him.
That includes authority over every created being—including angels.
4. The Son Is Eternally Greater Than Angels — and We Are in the Son
Jesus is greater than angels because He is:
- the eternal Son (Heb. 1:5)
- worshiped by angels (Heb. 1:6)
- enthroned at God’s right hand (Heb. 1:13)
No angel hears the words:
“Sit at My right hand.”
But the Son did.
And because we are united to the Son:
His position becomes our position.
His inheritance becomes our inheritance.
His destiny becomes our destiny.
We do not become divine— but we share in the dignity and authority of the One who is divine.
This is the miracle of union with Christ.
5. But There Is a Crucial Distinction
We must say this clearly:
✔ Christ is greater by nature.
✔ We are greater by grace.
Christ > Angels — by essence
Believers > Angels — by union
We never worship angels. Angels never worship us.
But angels worship Christ, and minister to us because we belong to Christ.
We share Christ’s exaltation as sons, not as God.
6. In Our Glorified State, We Will Fully Surpass Angels
The resurrection body we will receive (Phil. 3:21):
- is immortal
- is glorified
- is patterned after Christ’s body
- will reign with Him forever (Rev. 22:5)
No angel will ever sit on thrones.
No angel will ever judge creation.
No angel will ever be adopted as God’s child.
But believers will.
Humanity, redeemed and glorified, will take its place above the angelic realm—not because of our worth, but because of Christ’s worth.
Conclusion:
Christ is enthroned above angels.
And we are hidden in Christ.
So yes — the believer’s destiny is higher than the angels’, because the believer’s life is joined to the King of kings.
This is the wonder of the gospel:
Christ is the eternal Son by nature.
We become sons and daughters by grace.
And grace lifts us higher than angels could ever go.
