Did Jesus Really Live as Our Model? And Can We Walk Like Him Today?

5–7 minutes

When a lot of people read the gospels, they often relate with either the disciples, or by standers, or even sometimes to the Pharisees. But few with Jesus?

In fact, Jesus is the ONLY person in the gospels, who is similar to who we are. The others including disciples were not born again.

Far fewer seem to realize He’s also our example — not in a vague “be kind” way, but in a very real “walk exactly like He walked” kind of way.

And honestly, this is where people get uncomfortable.

Because once you say, “We should walk like Jesus,” someone will immediately jump in:

“Well, that’s because He was God. We can’t do what He did.”

But is that actually what the Bible says?

Let’s slow down, take a breath, and talk about this like normal people who actually read the New Testament.

1. So… What Was the Difference Between Jesus on earth and Us Today?

Here’s the surprising truth:

Not much.

And the Bible is the one that says that — not me.

✔ Jesus had a sinless nature

We have been made righteous in the spirit because we were crucified with Him. Our sinful body has been done away with, and we have a sinless nature. Read more on Part 5: Believers do not have a Sinful Nature: Gal 2:19-20.

Yes, we await for a transformed body, the kind of body Jesus had after resurrection- the one that could walk through walls and do all that cool stuff, but we have a sinless body like Jesus had before his death and crucifixion.

Isn’t that amazing?

✔ Jesus had the Holy Spirit

So do we.

Same Spirit.
Same power.
Same presence.

If Jesus walked in the Holy Spirit, then so can we do the same things. That is one of the inheritance of sonship.

✔ Jesus walked in the Father’s authority

We walk in His authority. Remember when Jesus said

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”- Matt 28:18-20

He said all authority has been given to Him, and GO therefore. Why? We use His authority.

✔ Jesus was one with the Father

We are one spirit with Him. If you think about it, the only real difference is:

He walked under the Old Covenant. We walk under the New. In other words, Jesus lived under a stricter covenant than we do.

If anything, we should feel more empowered, not less.

2. But Wait — Isn’t Jesus God?

Of course He is.

But here’s the part many miss:

Jesus didn’t do miracles on earth to prove He was God.

If He wanted to prove deity, He would’ve just said, “Everybody watch — I’m about to create a galaxy.” Remember, Heb 1:2 says everything was made through Him, and yet He doesn’t try to PROVE.

Instead, what do we see? As Phil 2:7 says he emptied himself, or he chose to walk as a son of God, like each and every one of us, rather than as God.

Thats why He says things like:

  • “The Son can do nothing by Himself.”
  • “The Father doing the works.”
  • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me.”

These are not the words of Someone flexing divine muscle. These are the words of Someone showing us how a Spirit-filled Son of God lives.

3. So Does That Mean We Should Be Able to Do What Jesus Did?

Well… that’s exactly what Jesus said.

“The works I do, you will do also.”— John 14:12

Not “sort of.”

Not “sometimes.”

Not “if you’re extremely holy.”

Just… you will.

Why?

Because He wasn’t walking around earth saying,

“Look how divine I am!”

He was showing us:“This is what a son walking in the Spirit looks like. Now you go do it too.”

But why? Remember when we discussed in Romans that gospel is about justice being served. You are walking in sonship so that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

4. This Is Why Renewing the Mind Matters So Much

Most of us don’t need more anointing or more holiness or more power.

We already have Christ in us. We have a sinless body (crucified), one with Him in the Spirit (1 Cor 6:17) and what’s the part which needs work?

What we need is a different mindset.

Jesus lived with full awareness of:

  • who He was
  • who the Father was
  • what the Spirit was doing
  • the authority He carried
  • the reality of the Kingdom

We renew our minds so that our thinking catches up with what our spirit already is. That’s mind-renewal.

5. But Didn’t Jesus Live Under the Law While We’re Not Under the Law?

Exactly.

This is a huge point people forget. Jesus lived as a man under Moses’ covenant. He had to fulfill every command, every requirement, every rule.

We, on the other hand, walk in the covenant He finished for us.

If Jesus could walk in that level of power under the Law…what excuse do we have under grace?

6. So Why Did Jesus Do Miracles If Not to Prove He Was God?

The Bible actually answers this:

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power…because God was with Him.” — Acts 10:38

Jesus healed, delivered, and worked miracles because:

  • He was anointed
  • He was led by the Spirit
  • He believed the Father
  • He walked in authority

That is exactly how believers operate today.

Miracles were not “Jesus showing off His deity.” They were Jesus showing how sons should walk.

7. So What Does This Mean for Us?

It means your life is supposed to look a lot more like Jesus than religion ever told you.

You’re not called to:

  • barely survive
  • quietly struggle
  • apologize for your faith
  • live powerless
  • wonder if God hears you

You’re called to live like a son or daughter who:

  • knows they’re righteous
  • knows they’re filled with the Spirit
  • knows they carry authority
  • knows they’re one with Christ
  • knows they can speak to mountains
  • knows they can heal the sick
  • knows they can destroy the works of darkness

This isn’t arrogance. This is identity.

8. Final Thought: Jesus Didn’t Live to Show He Was God —

He Lived to Show Us What a Child of God Looks Like

And now, under a better covenant, with a finished work, with a new spirit, with the Holy Spirit inside us…There’s nothing stopping us from walking like He did except one thing: What we believe about ourselves.

As your mind renews to the truth, your life begins to look more and more like His.

And that’s the whole point.
