Ever feel like “saint” is a title reserved for spiritual superheroes? Like it’s only for the holiest of the holy—the kind of people who pray for hours, never get angry, and definitely don’t forget their quiet time?
Well, Romans 1:7 says otherwise:
“To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Let’s dig into that short greeting, because there’s a lot packed into it—and it could change the way you see yourself.
You’re Not Earning Sainthood—You’re Called Into It
The original Greek phrase for “called to be saints” is κλητοῖς ἁγίοις—which literally means “called saints” or “saints by calling.”
That means Paul isn’t saying:
- “You’ll become saints one day if you keep at it.”
- Or, “You’re called and also happen to be saints.”
Nope. He’s saying your very identity as a saint is rooted in God’s call, not your performance.
This isn’t a future hope or a spiritual promotion you work your way into—it’s something that happened the moment God called you to Himself. You were set apart, made holy, and given a new identity by grace.
This Isn’t a One-Time Phrase
Paul says the same thing in other letters too:
- “To those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints (saints by calling here too)…” (1 Corinthians 1:2)
- “…who saved us and called us to a holy calling (saints by calling here)…” (2 Timothy 1:9)
It’s consistent. Your sainthood isn’t something you achieve—it’s something you receive. (Read We are not BEING sanctified. We ARE sanctified).
Grace First, Then Peace
Did you notice the order in Paul’s greeting?
“Grace to you and peace…”
Not peace and grace—always grace first.
Why?
Because you’ll never truly experience peace until you understand grace.
If you’re constantly trying to be more “worthy” of God’s love—more obedient, more consistent, more spiritual—you’ll never feel settled. You’ll always be wondering if you’ve done enough.
But when you get that grace means God blesses and calls you without conditions, something shifts. You stop striving and start resting. That’s when peace moves in.
You’re Not a “Work in Progress” Trying to Become Holy
Yes, we’re all growing. Yes, God is shaping us. But your status as a saint isn’t based on how well you’re doing right now.
You’re not working your way toward being holy—you were called holy the day Jesus saved you.
You are already loved. Already chosen. Already set apart.
So What Should You Do With That?
Live like it.
Not to earn anything—but because it’s who you are now.
Walk in grace. Let peace settle in. And stop disqualifying yourself from something God already gave you.
