We Have Been Freed From Sin: Rom 6:7

I keep seeing well-meaning believers post daily about how we need to “fight sin harder,” “die to self,” or “do more to crucify the flesh.” But the Bible doesn’t tell me to crucify myself. It tells me something far more radical: I have already been crucified with Christ, and I have been freed from sin.

What Does “Freed” Mean?

Romans 6:7 says:

“For the one who has died has been set free from sin.”

The Greek word here is δεδικαίωται (dedikaiōtai), from δικαιόω (dikaioō).

• It usually means: to justify, declare righteous, acquit.
• It’s in the perfect tense — a completed action with ongoing results.
• It’s in the passive voice — meaning the action is done to us, not by us.

So Paul is literally saying:

“The one who has died (with Christ) has been justified/acquitted from sin.”

What This Means

1. Sin’s claim is gone.
   Sin no longer has a legal right to rule over me. The trial is over, the verdict is in, and I’ve been acquitted.
2. I am not under sin’s tyranny.
   Before Christ, sin was my master. In Adam, I was born spiritually dead and enslaved (Rom 5:12; Eph 2:1). But when I died with Christ, that bond was cut.
3. I don’t need to die again.
   I don’t need to “die to self” every day. I already died with Christ once for all (Rom 6:6). Now I live in Him.

Why? Because Adam’s Connection Was Cut

My natural birth tied me to Adam — guilty, condemned, and enslaved. But union with Christ plunged me into His death. That death severed the Adamic line forever.

Now, I am:

• Justified — declared righteous once for all.
• Freed — sin’s chains are broken.
• Alive — raised with Christ to walk in newness of life (Rom 6:4).

Living From Freedom

This doesn’t mean I’ll never feel temptation. But it does mean temptation comes from outside me, not from some inner sinful self. The “old man” is gone.

So when I face sin, I don’t say, “I must try harder to kill myself.”
I say, “I am already dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rom 6:11).

That’s the difference between religion and gospel. Religion says, “Do more.” The gospel says, “It’s already done.”

✅ Conclusion

We have been crucified with Christ. We have been freed from sin. Not halfway free, not temporarily free, but fully and finally acquitted.

The cross cut the Adam-connection, and the resurrection gave us a new life-source in Christ.

So I don’t live fighting to die. I live resting in the fact that I already died — and now Christ lives in me.
