Love Is Not a Decision: It’s a Fruit of the Spirit

3–4 minutes

I’ve often heard well-meaning pastors say, “Love is a decision, not an emotion.”

I understand where they’re coming from — they want to remind us that love isn’t about fleeting feelings or romance. But there’s something deeper missing in that definition, and it’s been weighing on my heart.

Because if love is just a decision, what makes it different from a law?

1. The Problem With “Love Is a Decision”

When we say “love is a decision,” we’re often picturing situations where loving someone feels hard — maybe when someone hurts or offends us. We think, I should love this person anyway, and we make a conscious decision to do so.

But that sounds more like moral effort than spiritual life.

It sounds like an effort – like law — not love, not like a fruit.

If love is purely a decision, then it’s something we manufacture instead of something that flows from within. And that’s not what Scripture teaches.

2. Love Isn’t Manufactured — It’s Born From Within

Think about how you love your spouse, your parents, or your children. You don’t stop and decide every day, “Today I will love my child.” It flows naturally. It’s not an external act of willpower — it’s the response of a heart that already loves.

That’s why Paul says in Galatians 5:22,

“The fruit of the Spirit is love.”

Love isn’t a command to follow — it’s a fruit that grows from within you because the Spirit lives in you.

You already have love inside you. God is love, and His Spirit dwells in you. The issue isn’t that we lack love — it’s that we sometimes lose awareness of it.

3. The Real Issue: A Mind That Needs Renewal

So why do we sometimes find it hard to love others?
Not because love is missing — but because our mind is unrenewed.

Romans 12:2 says,

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

When you struggle to love someone, it’s not because you’re failing at willpower — it’s because your heart needs to be reminded of something:

➡️ How Christ loved you when you were unworthy.
➡️ Who you are in Him now — completely loved and accepted.

When that truth fills your heart again, love starts flowing naturally.
You don’t have to force it; you simply express what’s already there.

4. Love Isn’t Just a Feeling — But It’s Not Law Either

Now, to be clear — love can have emotion, but it’s not driven by emotion.
Love also requires choice, but it’s not powered by choice.

It’s powered by the Spirit.

When we live by the Spirit, love flows out of our renewed mind and new nature.
You don’t have to decide to love every time; you live out of love.

When someone hurts you, you don’t need to grit your teeth and “decide” to forgive.
You can pause, renew your mind, and let God’s love remind you how forgiven you already are. That revelation changes everything.

5. Renew Your Mind, Don’t Replace Love With Rules

Love is not a rule to follow — it’s a relationship to live from.
If your love feels forced, it’s not because you’re failing; it’s because your mind needs realignment.

Return to the truth of who God is and what He’s done for you.
Let that love overflow again.

The more you renew your mind, the more natural love becomes — not a decision, not a duty, but a delight.

“We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19

Final Reflection

Love isn’t a cold decision or a passing emotion — it’s a divine reality inside you.
When your heart is renewed by God’s love, His Spirit produces genuine affection, patience, kindness, and compassion in every situation.

You don’t have to create love.
You just have to stay connected to the One who is Love.
