Jesus Was Declared Son by the Spirit—So Are You: Rom 1:2-4

2–4 minutes

The gospel didn’t just appear in the New Testament out of nowhere. Paul tells us in Romans 1:2–4 that this good news was promised beforehandthrough the prophets, and recorded in the Scriptures long before Jesus was born.

“…the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son…” (Romans 1:2–3)

So when we say “the gospel,” we’re not talking about a new idea. We’re talking about the unfolding plan of God, from Genesis to Jesus—culminating in the arrival of His Son, the promised King.

Then Paul lays out something stunning in how he introduces Jesus. He contrasts two realms—His human qualification and His divine identity revealed:

1. “Descended from David according to the flesh” (κατὰ σάρκα)

Jesus didn’t just appear out of nowhere. He came through the royal line of David, just as God promised:

  • 2 Samuel 7:12–14 – “I will raise up your offspring after you… and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”
  • Isaiah 11:1 – “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse…”
  • Jeremiah 23:5 – “I will raise up for David a righteous Branch…”

In short: Davidic descent = Messianic qualification.

Being born from David’s line fulfilled the legal and prophetic requirements to be the Messiah. It proved His humanity, His rightful kingship, and His connection to Israel’s story.

2. “Declared to be the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4)

Now comes the divine revelation.

Jesus wasn’t just a royal descendant—He was, and is, the eternal Son of God. But that Sonship was declared with power, according to a different standard:

“…according to the Spirit of holiness…”

This phrase refers to the Holy Spirit—the very presence and nature of God, characterized by holiness. It was in line with the Spirit—and through His power—that Jesus was publicly marked out as the Son of God in power.

And how was that declaration demonstrated?

“By the resurrection from the dead.”

The resurrection wasn’t what made Jesus the Son of God—He already was. But it was the public demonstration, the heavenly megaphone that shouted:

“This is My Son, and He now reigns in resurrection power.”

3. And Here’s the Amazing Part: That Same Spirit Lives in Us

Paul says in Galatians 4:6:

“Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’”

And in Romans 8:11:

“If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He… will give life to your mortal bodies also through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

So just as Jesus was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness, so are we. We are declared to be children of God by the presence of the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead.

From Jesus to Us:

  • Jesus was qualified as Messiah through His Davidic descent.
  • Jesus was declared the Son of God in power by the Spirit of holiness.
  • This declaration was demonstrated through the resurrection.
  • And now, that same Spirit lives in us, affirming our identity as sons and daughters of God.

When you’re tempted to doubt your worth, your identity, or your calling—remember this:

The same Spirit that declared Jesus as Son now lives in you, and through Him, you’ve been declared God’s own child.
