How Do I Become More Like Christ?

2–3 minutes

The Common Misunderstanding

Many believers sincerely ask, “How can I become more like Christ?”
It sounds noble — but hidden in that question is a subtle assumption: that we are not yet like Him.

The problem is that we often confuse two different things:

  • Who we are (our new nature in Christ)
  • What we do (our outward behavior)

When those two get “mashed” together, the gospel starts sounding like a self-improvement program instead of a finished work.

You Don’t Need to “Fix” Your Heart

You’ve likely heard phrases like:

  • “I’m trying to get my heart right with God.”
  • “We need to prepare our hearts for Him.”
  • “I want to clean up my spirit.”

But none of these reflect the New Covenant reality.

The Bible declares:

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” — Ezekiel 36:26
“Put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” — Ephesians 4:24

If you’ve been born again, your heart is not dirty or half-fixed — it’s new, righteous, and completely clean before God.
You don’t need to make it pure; you simply need to believe what’s already true.

Growth Is About Expression, Not Transformation of Nature

Spiritual growth doesn’t mean your spirit gets holier over time.
It means your mind learns to express the holiness that already exists within.

When a baby is born, they’re fully human — they don’t become more human as they grow.
They simply mature into what they already are.

Likewise, when you were born again, you became fully righteous in spirit.
Now, through renewing your mind (Romans 12:2), you learn to live in alignment with that new nature.

Two Realities — One True You

There’s a big difference between:

  • Identity — what God says about you (unchanging)
  • Behavior — how you express that truth (growing)

Your performance doesn’t redefine your identity.
It simply reflects how much your mind agrees with what’s already true in your spirit.

You’re not trying to earn transformation; you’re living from it.
Because the moment you were joined to Christ, you became one with Him.

“As He is, so are we in this world.” — 1 John 4:17

God Likes What He Sees

When God looks at you, He doesn’t see a half-finished work.
He sees someone made perfect in His Son — clean, holy, and righteous.

You don’t have to strive for favor; you stand in it.
You don’t need to reach for holiness; it’s your new normal.

The only thing left is to let your outward life catch up to the truth of your inner life.

Final Thought

You don’t become more like Christ by working on your nature.
You live more like Christ by trusting your new nature.

For you are already who God says you are — complete in Him (Colossians 2:10), holy and blameless before Him (Ephesians 1:4).
So stop striving to become and start believing what’s already done.
Grace doesn’t invite you to perform — it invites you to rest.
