“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15).
The Greek word for “rule” (brabeuō) paints the picture of an umpire deciding the outcome of a game. In other words, Paul is saying: Let the peace of Christ be the deciding factor in your heart. When you’re unsure which way to go, let His peace make the call.
Peace as the Umpire
In moments of conflict, confusion, or uncertainty, our natural reaction is often to analyze every angle, weigh pros and cons, and overthink. But Scripture gives us a higher standard: let the peace of Christ call the shots. If something steals your peace and stirs unrest in your spirit, it’s often a sign to pause and seek the Lord before moving forward.
A Peace That’s Not Circumstantial
This peace isn’t dependent on everything going smoothly. Philippians 4:7 tells us it’s a peace that “surpasses all understanding,” guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. It’s rooted in the unshakable reality of God’s presence, His sovereignty, and His unfailing love—not in whether life feels stable.
Choosing Peace Over Pressure
When doubts creep in and decisions feel overwhelming, take a step back. Ask:
- Does this path align with God’s Word?
- Does it reflect His character?
- Do I still have His peace about it?
If the answer to that last question is no, it’s wise to wait. Sometimes, the Spirit’s leading is as simple as a settled heart that says, This is the way—walk in it.
Bottom line: When in doubt, don’t let pressure, fear, or feelings push you into a choice. Let peace be the umpire. Rest in Christ. Trust His timing. And follow the path where His peace remains.
